Default Where is everyone?

There hasn't been as much activity here this week, where is everyone? Like there's something better to do...

I've had midterms in most of my classes this week. I've been trying to get out and enjoy this new snow as well. I just saw Winslow driving around on my way back from skiing tonight.

Rawcode,

Where are you going to school? Are you going somewhere to get your Cisco cert, or are you doing self study?

I believe UAF currently offers Cisco management courses.

A am taking the Cisco classes from UAA! Once the classes are done we get a discount on the exam for the cert. I am quite confident that I am gonna do well on the test.

Now I just want a new job! sigh...

Do you have a job in the IT field now? What prompted you to go for a Cisco cert?

Hmmmm....I'll have to look into those courses, they probably also offer Unix too, right?

Ohhhh... and not to stray further off topic, but I believe there is a guy up here that owns a Ferrari, I've seen it a few times, and was quite surprised. I'm not up on my Ferrari models, but it looked like the one Tom selleck used to drive on that Hawaiian show.

Be prepared, UNIX is not fun. If you think WAN management is hard, don't think about UNIX, cuz yer head will explode.

I belive UAF is the only school in the state that offers UNIX as a class. I believe it's 4-5 days, 3 hours a day, for 3 semesters. Not fun stuff, but it can be rewarding, especially if you get on with a good telecommunication company.

I know our head UNIX engineer @ GCI makes between $200,000-$300,000 a year, plus full benfits. He passes most of his work load down to the minions, except for when the ***** really starts to fly, and when it does.... look out.

UNIX is not too bad to learn, you just have to use what you learn for awhile to keep the knowledge. I have done it on multiple platforms (IBM, Sun, Intel) and never really had problems. A couple years back I even got a chance to help my company design and setup 4 development sites in the lower 48 with 50+ development servers.

You can get a good start by playing with Linux at home and working your way up. Sun offers a free version of Solaris to registered developers. Just register as a developer for free on their web site and pay shipping to get a free copy of whatever version is current, I think it's 8 something.

00CameroSS, sounds like you may be talking more about phone switch administration??? If so, that's a different story. $200K sounds a bit high strictly for UNIX; are they a VP too?

RawCode, what are you going for, CCNA? CCNP? CCDP? If you get the CCDP (6 tests?) you can qualify for a Cisco job here in town when they have an opening. I currently have a CCNA and a CCDP working for me and look at Cisco the certifications more seriously than others right now. Cisco is one of the better certifications right now because it applies across the enterprise and is not completely Cisco-centric. Microsoft certifications seem to be a dime a dozen.

I went down the Novell track when I got certified 12 years ago 'cause it was just about the only thing out there. How things have changed...

You didn't know that's how Kris recruited his first members? Computer Doods.

Yeah, us computer geeks and our Subies, but now we have plenty of non-computer geek Subaru owners out there.

What is it about cars that draws geeks in like moths to a light? I've noticed this in the past, but can't really find anything about myself that gives me any clues?

I'm just glad to say that all these geeks are my friends and I wouldn't have met them unless we had some common bond.

Feel the love.
