Default what do they really want out of me??

c/n: do some workplaces like to just push you as far as they can?

so i'm masonary construction. i'm a laborer for a pretty big commercial company. been with them since may 1. got one raise already, albeit a small one. i'm a good worker, show up everyday and the only time i missed a week and 2 days was when i went away for my honeymoon. as far as i can tell my bosses like me pretty good, especially my foreman. he seems to prefer me for some little pet projects of his cuz i've been doing this for quite awhile before working for them. far as i an tell anyway

now, when fall hits projects start getting pushed to get get done before winter really hits. right now i'm working 7:30-4:30. m-f and sometimes 8-4:30 saturdays. in the fall, raindays can be expected at least 1 day of the week, so saturdays are kind-of make up day/setup for mondays.

talked to the foreman today, i said "so it's looking like saturday huh?" he says "yeah buddy, maybe longer days, we'll talk later though"

now, i don't mind coming in m-f and i don't really like saturdays, but i'm just doing it for overtime if i can before the winter. 1 day weekends suck. this is pretty hard work, 1 day leaves no time for recovery. that's what my muscles told me today anyway.

so my question is: when is too much, too much? if it was lighter work maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but........

do companies like this just like to see what they can get out of you? lately i feel like this is all it is.

Dude it ****ing sucks, but if you're in construction with the economy the way it is AND you're currently employed, thank a higher power.

I did Electrical Construction for 11 years out in the field and ALL 11 years Sucked!!!. Every friggin job ended up being behind schedual. So you would always be working 10 hour days M-F, and 8 hours on saturdays. Been out of that line of work since 2004 and i dont miss it one bit. The whole constrution scene blows IMO.

suck it up.

do you get paid by the hour? if so enjoy the fact that you're making extra $$ and you have no time to spend it. soon enough you'll be laid off and rent will be due.

Dude, you're basically 8 hours a day like the rest of us, plus a weekend day here and there. You're also young which makes it hard to feel too bad for you. There are plenty of guys who'd love to trade places with you.

DirecTV worked us 6 days sometimes 7 days a week from 6am to whenever you're finished. Sometimes as late as midnight and they still expect us to come in the next day and wrote us up if we didn't. I don't know about you but tv isn't THAT important to where we need to work past 5pm and 6 days a week. Was pretty lame. I did that for a few weeks/months before I got tired of coming home at 7pm having to nearly go right to sleep to get decent rest before the next day.

OP-I feel your pain. Some people can handle it. I couldn't. I got out and found a much better job. I took the pay cut to enjoy more free time and enjoy life more.

What was he going to talk to you about later? And depending on how your boss is, you shouldn't have to pay to drive yourself to their worksites. 10 minutes, 10 miles, or an hour and a half away. Thats BS.

1. construct yourself a giant warehouse
2. grow lots of marijuana
3. $$$

if you're going to be a laborer, might as well labor yourself in the #1 cash crop
