Default WRC Replica Bugeye - Build Journal

I'll start this thread off by saying that I've dreamed about owning a Scooby for a very, very long time. I tried Preludes, 350Z's, nothing fit the bill so I decided to sell the previous cars and do a proper build of what is my "dream" car.

I'll try and post regular updates here, but if you really want to keep track of the build, Facebook is the only thing I post to almost every day so you can get a regular dose of the project.

Thread index:
* Making my own gauges
* New wheels and tires

As a base I found a 2002 Bugeye with 130k miles on it. It started life as a base WRX and has been fitted with a brand spanking new rebuilt STi engine and drivetrain. I bought the car as it had pretty good power and was in pretty good shape for a platform to build on.

So without blabering on anymore, let's dig into some photos.

The car as I got it:

Fitting a Varex variable rear muffler and did a BiXenon retrofit to start things off:

And some photos from the past few weeks in the body shop:

Thanks for tuning in!

Best, Z

Default Tiny Update

So I'm picking up the car tomorrow from the body shop (full respray and WRC kit fitment), then it's off to the wrap guy for a week or so. But in the mean time wanted to throw out a side project I've been working on. Handcrafted gauges for the STi.

First of all the mission was to make an elegant piece of design that would fit on the top of the dash where gauge pods usually go. But I really didn't want clunky big ol' gauges and that pod ruining my interior. So I decided to make something classy... The electronics are custom made using an Arduino mega as the computer of choice. And the LED's are RGBW, so they have a pretty good color range.

A couple of renders of the design just to show the final product.

And now some shots of a prototype body I had made. Coming together, next week I get the engraved black glass and they should be ready to go.

Best, Z

I'll be making 5 sets of three gauges (boost, oil press and temp, intake air temp) for testing in the next month, if you'd like to take them for a spin for a few months I'd gladly send them over! The only thing is that you would pay for the material cost if you decided to keep them!

Gauge Updates! Still waiting on the glass, and I got a chance to play with some different options for diffusing the light. So far so good!
