Default Lexus confirms plans to build a BMW 1-Series rival

Quote:
Next year, Lexus is expected to add a small dedicated hybrid model to its lineup. In an effort to meet CAFE and European CO2 regulations, Lexus will also add another model that will fit under the Lexus IS. The baby-Lexus, which will take on the BMW 1-Series, was recently confirmed by the companyís managing director Tadashi Arashima.

Arashima didnít give out any possible launch dates or technical specs, but it is said that the compact rear-wheel-drive Lexus wonít arrive until next decade.

We might see an entry-level 4-cylinder and a V6 range-topper.

The dedicated hybrid, which will share its architecture with the Toyota Prius, will be shown in concept form at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show in January 2009. The car is reported to be powered by a 2.0 or 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine that will be mated to a nickel-hydride battery.

I wonder if this 1-series-fighter is anyway related to that Toyota-Subaru sporty car that is in the works. Makes perfect sense to use that platform - save tons on cost and let them price if below the IS.

Aww I was excited till I read that! Your right and I hope that they don't, I'd hate to see three different but the same cars running around and Subaru being one of the 'lesser'.

But think of it this way... you just know the Subaru one is going to be the cheapest... yet it would have to meet quality standards nearing Lexus-levels. Also because they might be making 3 cars from this one platform, they can invest in that much better engineering ... something that Subaru alone would never have been able to do.

Just trying to put a positive spin on it, ya know?

If done right, this car will make a big difference in Europe. Much easier to sell odd-ball brands in this segment.

I'm awaiting the "Nissan planning to make small, RWD coupe based on 510 concept".
