Talking Thinking of buying a '06 WRX...Suggestions?

I've always loved the WRX's for as long as I can remember. Recently, I've been browsing around for some car ideas. If i purchased a '06 WRX, i'd ride it for a while until I do a swap (most likely to a flat 6). It's going to be a car for me to tune a bit and still be able to be used as a reliable daily if need be. Can anyone please give me some great ideas for this purchase.

We can't assist at all as we have NO IDEA what you are going to do with it, your budget, etc. Without info, our advice will be all over the spectrum and be 100% useless.

My idea is to have a reliable WRX in the low 400 AWHP range that can also be driven as a daily driver.

I might also run it at my local track, Lebanon Valley Speedway. They host a ton of "Run What You Brung" events.

My budget isn't really limited

Do you know that the 06+ wrx and usdm STI's have the same exact engine block? All 2.5 turbo's do. The heads are tiny bit different, but both engines with the same turbo's will net you pretty much the same results. The drivetrain is
a different story though.

I own an 06 WRX, bought it new because I didn't realize that I'd inevitably start modding it. I now wish that I had bought slightly used 05 STI instead for the same price as a new car. Stage 2 STI should be all the power that you need and a much more stout tranny and a decent suspension to start with.

If you do your mods right it will be. I love my 06 wrx, got the 2.5 block, 4/2 pot breaks, aluminum control arms, etc. However keep in mod that starting with a wrx has its limits too, you need a new tranny/gears to hold the power,(which I am getting PPG to keep my 5spd), I also like my leather interior with sunroof which only the sti limited has. Only really bad thing I can say I hate is the glass tranny box and diffs. But all that can be changed

Putting an H6 into a WRX is dumb. There is nothing wrong with the EJ255, matter of fact there isnt much need for putting in the STI's EJ257. Both engines are similar in reliability.

If it were me and I wanted a reliable 400+ awhp WRX I know I need the engine beefed up (internals). I'd also know I'd need a stronger transmission to support that power.

Knowing that I would consider a GC8 through 2005 WRX with a total STI drivetrain swap having the motor build prior to installing it. Or an 04-07 STI running it with 400+ awhp until it blows and build the motor. Or lastly an 06-07 WRX with running it with 400+ awhp until the motor AND/OR transmission blows building them to support the power...

Personally with those goals I would spend minimal on the car and more on having a built motor and transmission not a newer model WRX....

agreed, i think perrrin tried a H6 swap and couldnt tune it no matter how hard they tried. If i were you and had the funds, i would get a GC and swap an STi drivetrain into it, that way you are way lighter than an STi with the same power and you have something that is relatively unique in the community that kicks some major ass. My buddies GC with 2.5 swap and vf39+meth will easily keep up with my other buddies STi with APS SR55 turbo (all supporting mods included on both).

An 06 makes a lot of sense if you're looking for a mild buildup because it's already got the 2.5 block. A full swap on an older chassis makes more economic sense if you're going for big power and building up the motor anyway.

Either way, have you read this yet? It's good food for thought.
