Question Emissions after motor swap

Has anyone had to do an emissions test after they did an WRX/STi swap???

When did OBDII come into existance??? Mid-90's right??? Is OBDII worldwide or just NA???

just wondering

I'm kind of wondering the same thing. I wonder what they had to do to make it legal.

I'm also wondering how the jap spec and aussie spec EJ20 does with our American lower octane gas. They run like 98 octane over there, right?

Thanks
Brad

IIRC their octane ratings are calculated differently.

Brad,
I've done a bit of research on this on the UK WRX sites, since they grey market import J-Spec WRX's as well as do engine swaps. Supposedly the ECU is pretty smart and what it does it restrict the boost and advance to prevent detonation. I've seen dyno numbers posted that indicate that the 276hp JDM WRX's drop to around 245hp on 95 octane UK gas.
And then for track day, you buy race fuel(100-102) at the track, reset the ECU and are off to the races, so to speak.

Once again, Sunoco 94 is equivalent to 98 RON gas throughout the rest of the world.

Of course, you could always fill up with 100 octane Sunoco GT

Cacophony,
Unfortunately, us poor fools in Nor-Cal can't get anything better than MBTE loaded 93 octane piss without going to the track.

As far as the emissions question, it should burn clean enough to pass even CA's smog. The trick is the visual( and it is a whole lot more than that here in CA). I used to run a JDM engine swapped civic, and it is some work to make it truly legal. But not all states are Nazi like CA. Best to research your local laws about transplants. Feel free to send me a PM if you want to pick my brain.

My '95 Legacy LSi has ODB II. It was the first year for Subaru.

Some states will allow a older engine in a newer car I have a '94 turbo motor in a '95 Imprezza and it passed. All it has to do is pass '95 standards but I am sure this varies state to state so it would be wise to check

As far as being Emissions legal. You are aloud to drop in a new motor to an older car but not the other way around. As far as passing emissions with a JDM motor I have no idea. Hope for a blind emission station if you have get smogged. May be that honda forum might be a better place to ask this question as there seem to be loads of JDM engines being swapped there.
