Default Report: 2010 Pontiac G8 ST to start in the 'low $30K' range in U.S.

Quote:
http://www.motorauthority.com/report...nge-in-us.html

The Australian-built Pontiac G8 will soon be getting its Sport ]Truck (or Ute, as the builders would call it) variant in the United States. According to the latest reports, the ST will start somewhere around the $30,000 mark, like its sedan counterpart.

How far below the $30,000 line the V8-powered G8 ST will go for isn't yet known, however. The dollar figure was given by GM communications Manager Jim Hopson, who said, "We expect G8 ST pricing will start in the low 30 [thousands]," reports ]PickupTrucks . So far there's no solid word on whether a V6 variant will be added yet, though there's a "growing movement" in support of it, according to Hopson.

If a V6 version does come to market, it could potentially start below the $30,000 mark since it will ostensibly be cheaper to produce and compete in a difference market segment.

The G8 ST will begin construction in July 2009, then make the pilgrimage across the Pacific to go on sale in the U.S. in the later part of the year. Interestingly, unlike many of its other pickup or SUV-like vehicles, GM has chosen not to delay the G8 ST. Its rather later entry to the market could play into that plan, as could its sort of half-car, half-pickup form factor.

I see this is nothing but a novelty item. A toy for single people... nothing more.

Screw the ST, if Pontiac hadn't canceled the G8 Wagon they would have had a guaranteed customer right here.

I see NO market for the ST, especially since it has no retro analog. Branded as a Chevy? Then yeah, I could have understood it, but I just think that a wagon would have been much more marketable, and has a retro analog since Pontiac wagons with big V8s were popular back in the day.

I do wonder why they are bringing this over... Seems like SSR Part II or something.. and I don't think that was all that successful either..

Maybe they could have put a manual on the current G8 if they were not bringing this over..

In some ways it is an SSR II. But I think that this will sell even worse than the SSR, which is bad since the SSR barely sold anything (talk about your possible future collectible though!). And in a lot of ways, the SSR was a better idea since it was a lot more versatile with the retractable hardtop.

This is just another example of GM thinking the right thing (G8 Wagon, G8 non GXP manual) and then doing the exact wrong thing (G8 ST).

But it bodes well for those who want them. If it follows the trend of the SSR I would fully expect them to be available for less than dealer invoice off the lot within a year or so of release.

I just hope they cram the 4.5L turbo-diesel in there before it get axed.

With the full-sized truck market in the dumps right now that would make a sweet little tow rig.

It's funny,In the 50's,60's,70's wagons were big sellers and all the manufactures had one in their line up.Now nada and nobody likes them(US).I thought with high gas prices poeple would dump the SUV and start buying Wagons.I think they look good..

Wagons have increased in popularity since the gas crunch, especially AWD wagons like BMWs, Audis, etc. etc. which are hard to find on the market and have been commanding a premium because they make a great alternative to SUVs and get much better gas mileage.

My theory on the hate towards wagons is because of the classic road trip stories. Everyone from the 60s, 70s and 80s remembers taking long road trips crammed into the back of the family station wagon, and over the years that has turned into resentment and hate

But it's unfortunate, because I agree wagons are pretty hot. A G8 wagon would have been a nice sleeper. The good news is Cadillac is still planning to go forward with the CTS wagon but still, a G8 wagon would have been very very nice and a must buy as far as I was concerned.

With its 580 hp, the 2008 Audi RS6 Avant represents the ultimate family car and yet, several tuners customized it in order to make it more powerful than it already is. The latest tuner who customized the RS6 Avant is DKR Tuning (same tuner who customized this Porsche 911 ), a German tuner specialized in what else than German vehicles. The new programme includes an ECU tweaking which boosts the engine from 580 to 660 hp and 750 Nm of torque providing a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph), a new H&R sport spring kit for better stability at very high speeds and is completed by the 20 inch Cargraphic RS alloy wheels. Also the interior received some carbon-fiber attention in order to make a unique vehicle. Price of the programme: €1,570 or $2,000.

Is this what spreading the Wealth is about,If so I am voting for Abama..

Thats what I was thinking, if they beefed up the suspension in the rear a little bit so it could tow 3500-4500 lbs, yet still got 25+mpg I think it would be a good idea!

What does a Tacoma (equipped to tow at least that much) get for gas mileage?

Not too sure if it will catch on here. In Australia every 1/10 vehicles seem to be Ute, they just love them over there.

Yep. Pick up trucks are much less prevalent over there than they are here. Tradesmen love the 'utes over there.

I don't think it will be that bad, I mean the SSR was like low 40 thousands before dealer mark up.

I actually thought they had said the ST wouldn't be coming to the US? Maybe I got mixed up with another thread saying they wouldn't call it an El Camino...

The SSR failed miserably because it was priced miserably. I like to see how the Ute will be received in the US. It's definitely not a car for everyone but I can see the West coast enjoying a vehicle like this.
