Default Finally bought my wrx!

EDIT: More pics Here

Well, after a few months of lurking and then posting here on NASIOC, I've finally made my Subaru purchase. I want to thank everyone for the knowledge I've been able to pick up so far, and I look forward to learning more!

So here it is.. Lightning Red 2008 WRX, base trim, for $20,700 out the door. I'm well aware of all the differences, but at that price I can easily save some money for mods later. I couldn't tell a difference test driving the two cars, perhaps as I've never had a performance car before.

I'll try to get some good pics later today. Here's one from my cell at the dealership:

I'm not up on the current pricing, but that looks like a damn good price to me. Well worth not getting a '09 IMO. Good job .

I usually don't like red wrx's but I have to admit it looks good on the 08 style. You're going to love it, have fun!

I'm digging the color. Just lower it a little and maybe some black rims and it would be hotness.

So.. here are some future plans for the car that I'd like to start researching. I've been reading forums here, and wrxtuners.com has a specific 2008+ forum. Are there other forums I should be reading?

My goal for the car is to maintain comfort while improving performance. I know this will limit much of what I can do, but I will never track/rally and I have family to consider as well.

2008 WRX 5 Door
Requirements: Sound levels below SPT exhaust, ride comfort comparable to stock.

Plans:

1. Getting a tune! This seems like the best performance upgrade for the least sacrifice in noise / comfort. If I am adding other mods, I may wait until after those mods are done to get a tune. Leaning towards open source / tactrix but will depend on tuners in the area.

2. Intake. I know 02-07 wrx intakes were fine but it sounds like the 08 could use a lil help, and I don't mind the intake sound.

3. DP? I would like to retain the stock muffler, if it isn't too restrictive. How much would swapping out the axle-forward piping change noise levels? I do not want catless. The 2009 supposedly has a much freer flowing exhaust.... maybe just grab one of those from an 09 owner who is upgrading? My goal here would be to achieve a stage 2 performance level without the noise associated with most tbe's. Suggestions more than welcome, but I am pretty picky about exhaust drone.

4. Tires. I know the stock tires are crap. They are also VERY noisy on concrete paving. I will be looking for good all-season tires, as I don't have the desire to dink around with the tpms and a second set of rims.

5. Suspension? I would love to lower the car an inch for looks, but I am wary of having too firm a ride. How much do the SPT pinks lower the car, and how would their feel compare to stock? Are there other springs worth looking into? What about sways / endlinks?

I'm also adding steering wheel audio controls via the control pod available on the premium trim. Will let people know how that goes.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to read and respond!

Look on forum 3gwrx.com for 08 stuff too.
Intake should be bottom of you mod list. Not much power gain from there and more problem then it’s worth.

DP I have a Cobb DP and really like it. It uses the stock donut type gasket to connect up to the stock CBE.

Get front and rear sways and you have a lot to choose from. I’m using Perrin front 25mm with stock endlinks b/c I haven’t found a aftermarket ones I like yet. I have tried a few and didn’t really like the fitment. Perrin rear 22mm with Rallitek endlinks.

Wow, that's seems really expensive. Any mods? My buddy just bought an 06 with 22kmiles for $18-$18.5k in NOVA. It was super clean and had very nice suspension upgrades and wheels/tires.

OP good luck with the car. I like the red; you don't see to many around.

Thanks for the feedback, particularly the reminder about 3gwrx. I browsed while shopping for my car but never joined / bookmarked.

How did the DP affect the sound of your car? I've heard some people say it gets much louder, others say barely or not at all.

As for the intake... I'm still hearing mixed reports. Some have said exactly what you said, others have said that's true of 02-07 but the 08 stock intake is so goofed up that it helps. Time for more research!

08 Sedan Owner here in the same boat (family, no tracking, daily driver) - I've done a lot of researching, waiting, more researching, etc before buying anything. Here's what I ended up doing:

1) AccessPort with Perrin's Stage 1 map and the difference in power delivery is pretty amazing. Highly recommended first mod. Perrin sells a stage 1 kit with the AP, their map, a PAF, and a neat shorty antenna for about $700.

2) SPT exhaust for the sound and the +10 hp

3) Got rid of the icky 2008 stock grill and put on a 2009 stocker instead (thanks Big Sky!) - looks much, much better.

Next: Rear sway, then front, and then springs if I'm still not happy with the handling. Tires will go on when the RE92s finally get dangerous. Looked into short shifter but haven't made it a priority yet. Will paint the silver stripe on the trunk too.

As others have mentioned, intake is pointless. I was looking for a DP as well, but after going with Perrin stage 1 my thirst for more power has been sated - suspension needs love now.
