best thing you can do is get a knock-free tune ASAP when getting it and hope for the best. At the same time creating a shortblock savings account.

I agree about things getting blown out of proportion but reading stuff like that is kinda scary.
Exactly. If Were going to be spending 20, 30,000$ on a car, and working our asses off, it better have 0 problems for all that money

Thanks for the advice. I may just do this then.

The STI's in limited form are going for about 40k OTD!

I meant for a used like 08 base for instance. Even that. I was doing the build your own Sti limited last night and it came to like over 40k. And 40k with like nothing even special, maybe like roof racks and minor add ons

Yea...mine had the short shifter, upgraded mirror, subwoofer, and vortex...which added a good $1400. But my dealer took off a bit too and threw in a tint so it wasn't too bad.

It's ridiculous the prices but I guess it's you get what you pay for. I just wish the new Sti limiteds were available in the hatch. I wonder how much it would be to special order a base Sti hatch with a sunroof installed. Probably like $3,000 from dealer. I spoke to the rip off manfredi dealership in SI,NY and he told me I can get it order but it would take 6-8 weeks

Find a better dealer. There are cheaper dealers, but 38k isn't much better than 40k

38 or 40k on a Subaru... My point was it is still offensive...neither of them are acceptable.

That was a proper market value according to Edmunds, USAA, and a host of other sites. Do I think the car is REALLY worth 40k? No. But I wanted it--and that's what it cost. It was only a bit over their dealer invoice.

If USAA says so, I trust it. USAA has helped me out so many times since I joined the military, they've never led me wrong.

Yep. It's a good organization. They've done me right for many years in and out the military.

I had an 07 sti and I had cyl 2 piston crack and cyl 4 piston melt to the cylinder wall. Subaru was covered it as the car had warranty. But about 600 miles after the fix I was receiving boost loss and engine knock soo I took it in again. After they fixed it I ended up trading the car in to carmax. I kinda want a new wrx but not sure if they fixed the issue on the new wrx/sti

Piston 2 and 4 huh? Seems to be a common trend.

Having ordered a 13 STi, the ring land issues worry me a little bit, but I'm mostly curious about the owners who know about the issue, but run out and mod the hell out of their cars, potentially voiding their warranties right off the bat.

If you're going to modify the vehicle, depending on the target WHP numbers you'll end up replacing or upgrading the fuel delivery system as well as the the pistons (maybe rods and a re-sleeve too if you're going high enough in HP).

So the "ringland issue" no longer becomes an issue as long as you button it all up with a proper tune since you're upgrading all the weak points that exist from the factory. I think of it this way: if I build up the engine properly with a modest amount of HP it's going to be a solid, and safe engine that will perform for many miles. BUT I'll be paying $$$$ for that, just as much (and more) as if the engine failed and I was to just get it "fixed" on my dime. Or you can leave it factory, pay for an extended warranty to 100k miles and if the thing pops from the factory's weak points it's fixed on Subaru's dime.

Just depends on what you want to do...

Spend upwards of 5k for a modest build-up OR spend give or take 2k for an extended warranty

True, makes sense. I figure I won't get the extended warranty, and wait to do anything until after 30k or whatever the normal warranty is. I really wish that Subaru wouldn't be so hard on people just for doing extremely mild things like cai,ap, and up/down pipes.

Details?

What was the break in process? How many miles when it popped? What cylinder failed? How was it typically driven? Etc.
