We had the Solo II board meeting this morning and have the first event planned!!
Mark your calendars for April 28th at Chugiak High School to attend the first SCCA event of the year, a non-championship event/ test & tune. Techinical inspection runs from 9:00-10:30am with registration running from 9:30-10:45am. End times reflect the close of registration and tech inspection meaning that you need to be completed by that time. Course walk-though starts at 11:00am with the event starting immediately afterward. Cost is $20 for SCCA members and $25 for non-members. For those looking to compete this year, I tried to find all the classes that apply to Subarus. I may have an error on a class or two for the Legacy but am relatively certain that the classes for RS and WRX are right on. WRX - D Stock (DS) - E Street Prepared (ESP) - Street Touring X (STX) - D Modified (DM) - Street Modified (SM) RS - G Stock (GS) - D Street Prepared (DSP) - Street Touring S (STS) - Street Modified (SM) - E Modified (EM) Legacy - H Stock (HS) - D Street Prepared (DSP) - Street Touring S (STS) - Street Modified (SM) - E Modified (EM) The difference between classes is essentially the level of modifications allowed. Here is a link more in depth discussion on car classifications. A chart of this years PAX (Performance Index/ Handicap) in addition to a description on the how this works can be found here [ Added 4-7-02] Of note to everyone, psuedo stock dealer add-ons, such as the short shift kit and 17" (BBS) wheels bump you out of stock and into either STX or ESP. Removal of pre-cats (up-pipe and down-pipe) are allowed in STX per Howard Duncan (SCCA Solo II Board)!!!!! Looks like the grounding mod will bump you out of stock and into either STX or ESP, but have to do more homework on this one to nail it down. The basic idea is that if it isn't a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) it is not a recommended mfg service change and is against the rules for stock. So far I don't think that there is a TSB on it yet. [End of 4-7-02 add] Hope to see you there AutoXr

Ron,
Since I do not have the new 2002 SCCA Rule Book, can you maybe answer a few questions about the WRX classes? I definately will not be stock, so D Stock is out. I do not think I qualify for Street Prepared Either as I have an aftermarket blow-off valve, and in the book it says that "This restriction does not permit changes to blow-off (pop-off) valves." I do not think I qualify for Street Touring (STX) either, as it appears that my 8" wide rims are too wide. Does possibly the STX designation allow higher rim widths, since it is not in the 2001 book. Under modified it says that you cannot have any wing at all, so not sure if that counts me out either. I could not find anything on Street Modified in my old book. I am trying to figure out what class I will be in , and make sure any planned mods will not push me up a class. I am planning on ordering some magnetic numbers and want to make sure I have the correct class. Well I am hoping to figure all this out so I can be sure and help class all the WRX's that come out. Let me know if the new book might shine any light on this, and I will talk to you later. Kris Kris |

From what I know ST and SP allow wings.
Wings may only be attached to the rear deck/hatch area and may not extend more than six inches beyond the widest part of the bodywork on either side. Full rules.... 18.1. ALLOWED MODIFICATIONS All Street Touring modifications are allowed. All Street Prepared modifications are allowed. Section 15.6(Prepared Category, Brakes), except for subsection 15.6.H. Drivetrain and related components (induction, ignition, fuel systems, etc.) are unrestricted except for the following limitations: Engine must be from the same manufacturer as the body (Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Datsun, Honda/Acura, etc.) Swaps involving makes related only at corporate level (e.g. Ford/Volvo, Renault/Nissan) are not recognized. Maximum engine displacement: Forced induction - 3.0L (OHC engines) 4.0L (pushrod engines) Normally aspirated - 6.0L Rotary engines (all) - 1.5L Must comply with section 3.6.6 (3.6.B? There is no 3.6.6) regarding fuel. Suspension components are unrestricted as long as they use the original attachment points. Brakes are unrestricted. Subframe connectors are allowed, but each connector must be attached individually without any lateral components attaching the two longitudinal frame rails. Subframe connectors may be bolted or welded The firewall, roof, doors, rear quarter panels, floor pan, trunk lid (if any) or rear hatch (if any) must remain stock. Holes may be drilled to allow attachment of body kits, etc. This specifically allows replacement hoods, fenders, wings, front & rear fascias, side skirts, and fender flares as per Section 14. Except as noted by these rules and the referenced rules, vehicles must be as originally delivered including all road going components such as lights, wipers, interior, heater, etc. Rear passenger seat(s) do(es) not need to be retained. Wings may only be attached to the rear deck/hatch area and may not extend more than six inches beyond the widest part of the bodywork on either side. RawCode |

Unfortunately I do not think that I can run in those two groups due to other modifications that I have on my car. Also, in Street Prepared, your wing cannot be more than 10 inches off the car, and I am not sure if mine will be or not. I will have to measure that when I get it.

Sorry I forgot to mention that those rules are for Street Modified. That might help a little eh? In SM they do not state a limit on the height of the wing.

RallyX13,
Regardless of which class you are in, there is a new safety rule that came into effect this year concerning NOS. Basically, you have to take the bottle out before you come to the event, just leave it home and you'll be fine. Let's start with the least restrictive class, D Modified, and work backwards. DM has a PAX of .894 The rear wing issue has to do with the width of the wing, not the height. Specifically, as RawCode stated, "Wings may only be attached to the rear deck/hatch area and may not extend more than six inches beyond the widest part of the bodywork on either side". Since this is specifically called out in SM, it overrides the rule in SP. I would say that as long as you have another SCCA tech inspector concur, you're good to go on the rear wing. Exhausts are something else. The rules for all Street Touring classes, including STS, STX, and SM, say you cannot remove any cats, however, you can replace them with high-flow units. Based on this, cat-less uppipes and downpipes automatically put you into D Mod. Here's some links that might help: SCCAForums thread on WRX Exhaust for STX Subrew.com Racing STS/STX setup guide Subrew.com Racing's Stock class guide Subrew.com Racing's Newbie Guide to AutoCross StreetTouring.com 2002 SCCA Solo II car classifications - Steve Mouton's web site Any other mods that you think you will have questions on? |

Winslow, you're in D Modified because you have removed catalytic converters, among other things

D Mod is up there in race car territory.
Thing is they might be the only people running in that class up here. Then it wouldn't be so bad.RawCode |

Ron,
Do not have to worry about the NOS, it will not be in my car. I do not really care what class I am in. Put me in Z-Modified for all I care, I do not go out to win or do best in my class. I go out to drive and have fun, so the class thing is really a technicality for me. Since it seems that D Mod allows for the most modifications, and I will not push myself out with more mods, then D Mod it is for me. I was not sure about mod though, since in my book it says that "Wings are prohibited, except for standard parts." But hopefully that is not the case, becuase I just want a class, and it sounds like D-mod will be for me. Well sounds good, and if everyone agrees on the D-mod, then maybe I can get my numbers on order. Kris |

I don't know of anyone running D-Mod up here right now. Can't say that I've ever seen anyone run in it over the past 4 years either. Looks like it might be a popular class though with all of the mods allowed and the way the WRX fits in. I might consider it if I was going to make the exhaust upgrades.

And what is the visual clues to this conclusion that I have this sort of upgrade? I say just enter in and have fun. After the first run you usually get better time after each run.

Yeah,
I think D-Mod will be the place to be this year at SCCA. Hey Ron, I am assuming I can keep my old number even though it is a different car? Kris |

If you plan on going with the Stage One, then you'll be removing cats. Vishnu Stage One only has one cat in the downpipe.

Ron,
Thanks for clearing that all up, I am going to try and order my numbers here in the near future. I think I will utilize my old magnets, and just order new vinyl for them. Kris |

Kris, what's your hookup with magnetics and numbers? Is it local? I'm sure that other people might be interested and you could make some cash too.

Hmmm....so does that mean I am in the E Modified class (going by the DM suggestion), or am I only Street Modified or Street Prepared?
I can't figure it out. I have an intake and exhaust, not much else really. |

The hookup could be local if KapaFool gets off his A**. He has access to all of those things. That's where I'm getting my stuff.
