Default looking at a few cars, need some advice

ok so I have my eye on 3 WRXs in my area. 2 are about 2.5 hours away and ones 1.5 hours away. all 3 are at major full line dealerships, ones at a honda dealer, ones at lincoln and ones at a subaru dealer. ive been in contact with 2 of the 3, one has not replied yet and have requested pics of the cars. ive also asked about the maintenance history, especially timing belts, but im not holding my breath. dealerships usually have no idea about the cars. heres my dilemma. im dealing with a bit of a budget, I can afford all 3, but there are 2 that have a bit more miles that will me a lot easier on my wallet. heres the cars, all are bone stock as far as I can see

1 02 WRB 116k and change 8900

2 02 black 103k 8500

3 03 silver 82k 10900

the car with 82k is a lot more money, but its got much lower miles, this is also the dealership that has not contacted my yet. basically I need someone to set my mind at ease about getting a car with higher mileage, unless theres a really good reason to go with the car with 82k, Im sure I can get them down on the price, maybe even close to 9k, dont know if I can get the other dealers to go down on the higher mileage cars because there already a bit below book as is, but I may. dont know just need some advice.

also would it be ok to get the cars inspected at the dealers their at?? Im thinking since their major dealerships and not small independents they may be less prone to try and screw me, but again I dont know, im always a bit wary about dealerships.

I dont know, but I would expect them to last longer than that. that said its all about the PO though, if the car was abused than maybe, but im not am expert.

just got off the phone with the subaru dealer, the one with the 82k car and he said its in real nice shape and the best the can do on that is 10500, so im dealing with a 2k price swing. is it worth the extra money to get a car with lower miles?? still waiting on replies from the other dealerships.

It all depends on how the car has been treated. You have no way of knowing if how modded the car was or if it has been returned to stock.

i personally wont buy a car over 50k just because of every day abuse. It sucks to say but you have to think of it as everyone else being an a**hole driver and not knowing what they are doing. I always assume that the car has been beatin on being as it is a turbod car. Your best bet is to take it for a test drive and if you know any mechanics swing by and let them take a look at it...check for leaks, signs of abuse, squeaks/rattles....not saying that you cant do this but generally when you see a car you like your brain allows you to over look certain "minor" things.

That being said I would deffinatly go for the 82k car...just a personal opinion, do with it what youd like lol

Jimmy

PS...he says 10500 is the lowest he can go but if you walk in there with 10000 or even 9500 cash his manager will probably stab him for not making the sale.....tricks of the trade.....take it from a former car salesman if they're saying 10500 is bottom line.....they paid 7500-8000 for it

youre right I have no idea, so I do have to and do assume its been beat on, I am gravitation towards the lower mileage car, but the only think is it will stretch my budget to the limit. I may call the dealership tomorrow and see if the can preapprove me for 250 a month or less, if the can get me that ill be fine. I got a little money down so they may be able to do it.

the 03 has a better tranny if that helps you at all. and low milleage is always something that i look for when buying a car, aside from the normal abuse people can do.

depends on when it was made in 03. they didnt put the wider gears on it till late 03.

reguardless the trannys you need to be careful on there not the strongest.

just look for OBV signs of wear on it and mods look for things missing and look for holes in the rubber going threw the firewall

^Not true, my 2002 has RA width gears.^

I also have 150,000 miles, and the turbo is just fine and stage 2 to boot.

Compression is 150-155-155-155.

Get whichever one is in better shape.

ok its RA width but not strength. its only 1mm wider. it really doesnt change the fact the if the tranny sees to much shock load it will break.

i didnt think they did the wider gears till late 03 from what ive heard. oh well

people have broken the transmission with a stock car. but there are some that ran FP greens and not broke them its how you drive.

but ive broken 2 trannys one because i was an idiot. and the 2nd was just weird and it was the JDM sti V4 5 spd

I understand the not telling them my max payment, but what do you mean Ill end up screwed on all of them?? you think I need more for down payment?? or do you think theres problems with the cars?? ill be putting nearly 10% down, more than that actually if I can get them to 9500 where I want them. I also have some credit issues, so its a bit up in the air whether I can get approved at all, especially with the economy right now, this is the reason id like to get approved before I go up, hate to go all the way up there and then go for the loan and not get approved, wasted trip. I would like to not let them know what I can pay so I can get the best deal, but in my current situation its probably not possible. the things gonna probably get refinanced in about 6 months anyway.

just imo that is a lot of $ to pay for a used car with that many miles. there are alot nicer 02-05s on here with a lot less mileage than those and only selling for $1-3k more

I would try to talk them down a little bit on the 82k mile one. Although according to the blue book with 82k miles and in excellent condition is worth a supposed 12,345 (odd number)....So you might not be able to talk them down too much. However there is no way that a 6+ year old Subaru is in excellent condition, you'll be able to find door dings and flaws in the otherwise cheap paint...

Do NOT tell them 250 a month!!!

If you want to get a fair deal, I suggest you ask your bank what APR you qualify for on a loan. That way you go into the dealership with at least some idea of a fair APR. To get the best deal, you should shop around even more.

Once you know what APR you want, go to An Auto Loan Calculator and plug in how much you want to pay, and your APR. Then you can figure out how long a loan you should take to get the payments you want. Longer loan = more interest paid.

They could find you a 5 year loan for $10,900 at 14% and that would be payments of $253.62. You mention not having the best credit rating but even so, when I got into trouble in college I still got approved for 8.5%

Iam sorry but at present you can not afford a 'used WRX' Buy a cheaper car and wait until you can buy a lower milage WRX from a private party.
