Default Help! White smoke still coming from exhaust.

I just brought my 07 sti to the subaru dealer for the second time for white smoking bellowing out of the tailpipe at idle. The technician said it could be a characteristic of the car... i laughed. The first time he said he could not recreate the smoke. He showed me another car that smoked trying to act like all sti's smoke. I said that it seems you have another broken car. It runs fine normally with 21k miles on it. Bought it used with 15k. I really don't know what to do. It seems liek the technician does not want to actually fix the problem. Should I try to claim that its a lemon? This would mean i need to try and get it fixed 2 more times at a total of 4 times. I've called SOA and they just told me to make sure the service manager saw the smoke. He has seen it twice.

Any suggestions would help.

Make a trip to a different dealer and see if they are willing to dig further into it, not all dealers are equal.

As for claiming it a lemon That typically only applies to NEW vehicle purchases. Lemon laws do very from state to state so it would be a good idea to read up on your states code to see if it is even an option. http://www.carlemon.com/

Yeah that was my next plan, to take it to another dealer. The closest subaru dealer is about 3 hours away. I bought the car in Oklahoma, and they do have a used car lemon law. I would rather have them fix the problem. Well hopefully I will get the car back this week fixed.

The white smoke sounds like one of the headgaskets is leaking coolant into the combustion chamber and burning, causing the white smoke. Run the car and go to the tailpipe and sniff at the pipe. If it smells sweet, then its a problem with coolant getting into your combustion chamber, and could ruin the turbo also. If the smoke has a blue tint then it has an oil leak.

Well the subaru dealer held the car for a week again. They could not find any leak. So they called SOA and they suggested that it could be from using synthetic oil. Changed the oil to dyno oil and it does not smoke nearly as bad. It still smokes a little after idle. Perhaps i need to use a different synthetic ??? I was using Mobile 1.

Sounds like coolant leaking in... does it fade after a while? Maybe it's water vapor steaming off.

It fades as soon as I rev it up and start moving. This happens after I have evaporated all the condensation. As soon as I idle for 30 seconds it builds up a good size puff of white smoke.

Is it a light shade of blue smoke? Reason I ask is it may not be coolant based upon your oil switch comment. Given that it's an 07 I suggest you take it somewhere like topspeed (they are near to you) and have the compression checked along with a few other things.

OR just make your dealer do a compression check.

Now they have the engine apart and cant figure out whats causing bad leakage, the compression came back fine.
