Default Upgrading headlights for 2000 Impreza?

Hey everyone, I have a 2000 Impreza and I've been looking at possibly getting either a set of driving lights from PIAA, or buying a new headlight kit w/the crystal finish. I recently upgraded my bulbs to some PIAA Extreme White and while the increased brightness is noticeable, it could still be a lot better. I've checked the aim and it seems to be OK (there are these bubble levels near each headlight assembly).

Anyways, anyone know of a cheap solution for this? The problem is that the headlights are the older model ones with all the patterns on the front which I guess spread the light. Would getting a clear headlight assembly help? Or would I be wasting my money? Would a set of driving lights be a better solution?

I saw these lights on ebay which they have in "black" and clear:

Or these are the PIAA lamps I've been looking at instead:

Any ideas or comments about what I should do? The headlights on there now don't need to be sanded at all because I did that about a month ago. Thanks!

Dont get that ebay crap.

You should get new fogs/driving light. Then if you need more just do a retrofit.

That's strange I thought 2000 had the clear lenses.

You could start by getting better headlight bulbs. Colored bulbs like that are probably dimmer than the factory ones. They may have a nice color that makes them seem brighter but they are not. I put those PIAA bulbs in the same category as cheap EBay bulbs and Sylvania Silverstars. The PIAAs may last a little longer but they are not any better light output wise. The brightest bulbs have clear lenses. I had Osram Nightbreaker +90 bulbs in my 95 Coupe. They do have a partially tinted lens but in the area that the majority of light is emitted they are clear. Pretty much the only thing that has the blueish tint is the glare. So they still look whiter but the tint doesn't effect the output. There are a lot of other good bulbs on the market as well like Osram Silverstars, Narva Rangepower, and Philips Vision Plus. Check out these articles from Daniel Stern.

Thanks for the info, yeah I'm not exactly sure why my 2000 doesn't have clear headlights. A friend of my parents is a Subie mechanic and he fixed the 2000 Impreza which I now own. I guess that it was in an accident, so a new engine was put in as well (so I guess it's possible that they just used whatever headlights they had).

I didn't know that about PIAA and similar bulbs, I figured that since PIAA was a decent brand they would be good.

Which ones in that article would you suggest: Narva RangePower+50 and RangePower+30, GE Night Hawk, and Philips Vision Plus, and Osram Silver Star?

If the headlight housing is getting fuzzy or yellow, you could always polish them...that helps restore some clarity and brightness.

I wouldn't do 800 grit though.

I've done 1500 + 2000 + polish with good results

I really like my Osram Nightbreaker +90s. They are probably the brightest standard wattage bulb on the market right now. I got mine from www.candlpower.com. They only make them in certain sizes. I'm not sure what size bulb those headlights you have use, but if you can get Nightbreakers for them, you will be pleased. Most of the +50 bulbs preform similarly from what I have read. If you can't get the nightbreakers the Narva +50, Vision plus, or Osram Silverstar are all good options.

@ritky

I've already done the sanding and polish, but my lights seemed to be fine and probably didn't even need it.

@FourOnTheFloor65

Thanks for the help, the '00 Impreza takes H4 bulbs and I've found the Nightbreakers in that fitting, so it looks like I'll try them out. Thanks for your help! I wasted $50 on the PIAA bulbs and I would have wasted another $200 on some ghetto headlights!
