Default I Broke My JIC Not So Magic Strut

Just got back from the last Mid-Atlantic NASA event of the year. On the second session Sunday afternoon my driver's side rear strut failed going into turn 1 at Summit Main. I've posted some pictures from the weekend below, including some of us unloading the car off the trailer. I'll post more details tomorrow. I've also linked to the video of it happening. Some good pictures of my front brakes getting a work out.

Ruined barrel on the CCW wheel.

Getting a jack under it to drag it off the trailer.

That would scare the **** out me. Between JICs failing, my rear Teins blowing out, and stock struts clunking, I have to wonder if there's some kind of gnarly binding/side-loading going on in the back end when the car is lowered a lot, or the suspension is compressed a lot.

I've seen this happen to someone on the s2ki forums a while back. I will never buy a JIC suspension product. Ever.

There have been stories about JICs blowing/breaking like this ever since they started showing up. Add another one to the list.

This is why I've only run Konis since 2005.

Good luck w/ getting it sorted out, Dunk! Buttdyno's JIC issues took over 1 year. I think one of the Andrewtech cars (konkilr) had similar failure with the front passenger side one) at an autocross.

That's scary stuff. Especially at the T1 braking zone. I saw you parked out there, and guessed it was engine/drivetrain issue. Glad it didn't turn out any worse considering the strut broke !

No surprise here, as KC said, these things have been failing since the beginning. I'm surprised nobody has sued them yet.

This is what happens when the strut body is made out of cake batter.

Class action anyone?

You and everyone else is just lucky that nobody has died yet.

We should start a ban on JIC for all nasioc board members. Why buy there junk if it seems to fail alot.

holy **** dude, that's terrible. HOWEVER, I do see a HUGE Jic sticker on your car which leads me to believe they sponsor you. Have you contacted them as of yet to see what they plan on doing for you? No matter what, you should be receiving new coilovers. I'm not sure what they could possibly do about the wheel, even though it's their product which caused that to happen.

Ouch. Auto-x, not so scary, track moar scary!

Cool rear splitter by the way. I'd be fun to fab up something like that for my toater, although it needs a good bit more then that.

Downright scary thing to happen at that point on the track. Hope the rebuild goes smoothly. JIC should spot you a set of ZZYZX struts to ensure it never happens again. Sadly, this isn't the first time we've seen them fail, undoubtedly won't be the last.

I would have to tear the JIC decal in half and apply it 90* from another.....
