Default Element Summit Point NASA TTB Lap record with 08 WRX (Video)

I actually really love driving my 08 WRX and couldn't be more impressed with the new chassis. I knew it was fast but not this fast. I was expecting to run in the 1:25s since I was running street tires but a 1;23.8 blew me away. This time is also fast enough to break the current Nasa TTA lap record for Summit Point.

For the chassis I have the Element Tuning custom BC Racing Coilovers setup really well, GT Spec chassis braces, 6 Gun Ball Joints and bump steer kit, front and rear sway bars, Brembo STi front calipers, Dunlop 245/45-18 Z star Spec tires, and rear camber adjustment kit. All I can say is this car's lap time are a reflection of it's grip and not the power. The new chassis is impressively stiff and has so much more grip than the previous chassis.

Power Mods:

Stock Engine
Element Hydra EMS 2.6
Element Hydramist
Element Header
Element Uppipe
Element GT52
Element Downpipe with 3" High Flow Cat
06 STi intake manifold
06 STi TMIC
Modified Stock Injectors
TurboSmart BOV

Chassis:

Suspesion: Element Tuning Custom BC Racing
Braces: GT Spec
Ball Joint: 6 Gun Racing
Bump Steer: 6 Gun Racing
Wheels and Tires: TR Motorsport 18x8.5 Dunlop Z Star Spec 245/45-18
Brakes: Front STi Brembo, Pagid Yellow. Rear: OEM
Sway Bars: Front and rear still testing
Camber: Rear camper bushings

We limited the power on this car to 350-375 whp on pump gas and Hydramist and 375-400 whp on 100 octane and Hydramist since it does have a stock WRX 5 speed and clutch. No doubt the car is heavy since the only weight saving mods it has involved removing the junk in the trunk. LOL!

I now need to work on the brakes a little more along with more front aero work. I want to keep this a true street car so I'm limiting myself to what I'm willing to do but I think I can shave another second off the car without resorting to unbearable suspension or more power.

Simple effective mods!

Thanks,
Phil

Nice work. Looks like you guys had another good weekend with the car. Can't wait to see it fully sorted and still street driven.

Maybe not the right place, but I'd like to give a shout out to Cale, the driver of the S2000 who lost his life yesterday running with you guys. He was an incredible person and a rising driver, winning the mid-a 2008 TTC championship in what would be his last event. Ran a 1:24.6 on a stock-powered S2k. RIP Cale. I still owe you dinner.

Thanks. I don't think it will get much faster given I'll be restricting myself to prevent it from tuning into a race car but I can shave a little.

Cale is in the S2000 you see in the video. Cale meet me once 3 years ago and still remembered me as we chatted on the grid about our lap times times. If he remember me from meeting me once three years ago I could only imagine he was a great friend to those close to him. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and those close to him.

Thanks,
Phil

Sad, hate losing one of "our own". RIP.

On other news, just goes to put another notch in the Dunlop belt, I love those friggin' tires.

Yes they have proven excellent so far but I don't really have any other "street" class tire experience to directly compare. They are still a couple seconds off the pace of a Toyo RA1 for a street worthy tire very nice!

Thanks,
Phil

They kept him on life support for his parents, and because he's an organ donor. But yes, no brain activity and will be taken off support soon, if not already.

Don't want to speculate too much, and tubedriver and chime in here if he's heard more...but Cale went off the back of turn 1, people say it looked like he had lost brakes. Instead of goign straight off into the pebbles, it appears he attempted to point it down the access road, as the car took a noticeable turn to the left. Looks like he might have been aiming for the gap in the tire wall that leads to the skidpad. Unfortunately, he got the wall, at a portion without tires.

Right side hit, head/neck trauma from the lateral load appears to be the cause. He was an honest to god great kid.

We'll definitely keep it going for 09 doing double duty with our TTU STi.

Looks like you'll have a front-runner in the Street AWD class next year with us, eh?

Well I hope to continue the winning trend

Did anyone see my car on the exit of turn 1? I was spinning one of the inside wheels but I couldn't tell if it was the rear or the front so I would like to know which.

Thanks,
Phil

What do you guys think about the STi front on the WRX 4 door?

I still need to have a custom side skirt made but I think a 4 door STi would be a good move for Subaru.

By the way our 08 WRX was faster than this FR500 mustang but it was all driver. There was another one racing in the 1:21 range which isn't too shabby.

Nice job, Phil.

I was watching from T1, and no doubt your car was entering the braking zone at "warp speed." It was like fast forward compared to other cars in the group.

Congrats on the lap record.

Thanks! Too bad I couldn't hang with the Skyline. I was talking to the driver and he was able to muster a 1:22 totally stock and was hitting 148 mph on the front straight. I think I was close to 135 mph in the 08 WRX.

My brakes were having a hard time and I wasn't comfortable pushing the braking point going into T1. If this wasn't my street car I would need to increase the spring rates as I was dancing with the steering wheel in the braking zones. It probably didn't help I was using OEM shoulder belts.

How did the sessions go in your Mustang?

Yes, Cale is driving the red s2000 in front of me a the beginning of the video.

RIP Cale.

So far a very basic investigation is pointing towards a broken right rear rotor as it was completely gone from the vehicle.

The reason I was at this event with my 08 WRX and not our Time Attack STi is because we found two small cracks through the rotor on the inside fronts. I don't really make an effort to look on the inside of the rotors at the track but we found it during the after race inspection on the lift. None of this may have mattered in Cale's incident but guys please check your rotors and pads before every session especially on day two.

Phil, didn't anyone tell you that BC Racing coilovers are ... "cheap taiwanese garbage" just like Megan Racing?

Your 1:23 doesn't stand. There's a rule about it. No parts are allowed that the mad-tyte-JDM-yo crew dislikes.

Yeah so I'm told but I also run broken a$@# JIC on my STi and have the lap record in TTU also at 1;17 I guess I just like going across the grain ......or maybe I'm just that good....no......maybe....well......I don't know....better just let the results do the talking.

Congratulations Phil, glad to see you are doing well with our coilovers on your WRX. You have 3 wins now and 2 records on your setup correct?

Keep up the good work buddy

That picture was a quick "merging" of two photos. The Mustang wasn't actually close enough for me to get them both in the same shot

But it's still cool.

I probably will at least at some events as it can be really tough racing two cars when both run at the top of the field. I remember the Redline event at NJ Motorsports park I raced this 08 WRX, pulled into the pits, hopped out, strapped into the STi, and then ran immediately in that car.

Sorry to dig up a kinda oldish thread, but Phil, can you provide a litle more info and feedback on your BC coilovers?

I know they are the ER (external reservoir) models, but what spreing rates and what else has been done to them? Also, how would you compare them to your old JiC coilovers and other suspension in your other track cars?

Many ppl on NASIOC seem to think any coilovers that cost less then Ohlins are ****e full stop, but it seems there are a growing number running BC coilovers with great results.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Leslie.

The suspension we use on the 08 WRX has been changed since this thread but we offer a few different custom versions. We do not use the ER series on our "Street" class car.

This new setup has custom valving to match our spring rates (we change this based on what the customer really needs) and in this case we also use a high rate helper spring. The high rate helper allows us to get proper sag but it also takes the sting out of the high rates on the street. It doesn't make it soft but it softens the initial inch or so of the main spring rate even though the helper is fully collapsed.

Our "Unlimited" car runs the ER series with custom valving and spring rates. Overall quality is up from the JIC and performance has also improved. Much of that however is also attributed to us knowing what we needed to change to make the suspension faster. So far I'm extremely happy and people can order the custom BC units from us.

Thanks,
Phil
