Default Sticky Throttle?

2005 2.5RS, mt, 40,000mi.

After driving the car for a while it does something odd.

When I decelerate and put it into neutral, the RPM's will drop below 500, then jump to 1500 and idle for a few seconds. After coming to a complete stop for a few seconds, it will then drop back to 500 and idle normal.

sticky throttle? messed up ecu? the gas I use? anyone know?

any mods or ECU changes? You should be DBW, but someone said their 05 throttle was cable actuated.

I was told that the 2005 is not DBW.

FWIW, my 2005 RS does the exact same thing. It's got 83k miles, and has done it as long as I can remember. Does it mostly in stop-n-go traffic or after a cold start. I think it's probably an issue with the drive by wire software.

2005 USDM 2.5RS does have DBW wire throttle. I would suspect that all USDM 05's are DBW because the difference between the non-DBW and DBW models is quite a bit in terms of the ECU and sensors. seems silly to change it mid model-year. But, i have heard people say that their 05 impreza is NOT DBW... this thread obviously supports that.

Cutting the wheel hard and hitting the steering stop will put a heavy load on your PS pump, and if your belts dont slip (which they shouldn't) then your engine has to assume that extra load. If at idle, that load would easily upset the idle speed and cause the IAC and ECU to adjust to maintain idle speed. i could see this causing surging/lagging rpm.

The overwhelming majority of 2005 RSes are DBW. It seems that there's a particular option pack that you could get outside the USDM that was cable throttle for the first couple of months of MY 2005. So there's probably a couple of hundred cable-throttle 2005's running around worldwide and several tens of thousands of DBW 2005s.

+1 to having an 05 with DBW. From previous research i think what happened is 05 have DBW with a make shift ECU upgrade to run the DBW and the MY06+ have DBW with the newer ECU. I could be wrong but thats what i recall. I always get stuck with make-shift engine/ECU combos, 93 S10 with the vortec engine if anyones a chevy fan. only made that engine for 2 years.

I'm not at all sure what you mean by "make shift ECU". It's the same ECU as the rest of the DBW Imprezas are running, just with a different ROM in it. However, the physical hardware of the engine for 05 IS a one-off. We got DBW, MAF, and a metal IM unlike the 04s, but we didn't get the AVLS and repositioned MAP sensor like the 06+.

subaru does plenty of changes mid-year, I'm not saying that this is what is the config on your, but pop your hood and look at what you have instead of reading opinion, you mook. It sounds like your IACV is slow on the take. You may try cleaning it.

good suggestions. thanks for the support. Based on what I have read I am pretty confident that it is not a major issue; righteous.
