Unhappy Death at Summit Point

My friend is an instructor for HPDE and regretfully announced this today.

RICHMOND, CA (Nov 11, 2008) — The National Auto Sport Association ( NASA) regretfull y announces the passing of Cale Kastanek of Hagerstown , MD from injuries suffered as a result of an accident on November 9, 2008 at Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point , WV. Cale was a champion competitor , seasoned instructor , and great friend to many in the motor sport s community and the NASA Mid Atlan tic family. Cale was active in many forms of motor sport s inclu ding Time Trial , autocross, and also many other activities related to his love of the Honda S2000 . Cale was also a profession al pilot and an avid mountain bike enthusiast . Cale will be missed sorely and we wish him Godspeed.

Be safe out there, guys.

On a happy note, apparently he was an organ donor and saved 6 other lives.

( I know there is a Summit Point thread, but thought this deserved it's own.)

More info:

His car went off Summit Main's turn 1, tracked to the left and struck a bare concrete wall near the skid pad entrance. No one knows what happened but most suspect some form of brake failure.

Sad story... just goes to show how dangerous a sport it really is, no matter how safe you think you are.

It's so terrible to see something like this happen. It really puts a reality check on a few things, even though I didn't know hime personally. It can happen to anyone, anytime and this just goes to show it. Be safe out there and RIP.

Guys, I've known cale for the last 2 years and he was a great guy. Also an organ donor that helped save many lives. I'll miss not seeing him at the track as he was a joy to be around, and lived life to its fullest.

Cale was a great friend, a talanted driver, professional pilot, decent mountain biker (and rapidly getting better), and one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He will be missed.

Gods speed Cale.

Thought about you today Cale...

True story: When Cale had his house built, he had a 6 ft. diameter steel tube buried in the ground between his place, and his brother's (iirc) next door. Not sure he ever got around to knocking out the basement wall, creating a secret passage between houses...

But that you had the balls to do it was awesome.
