Default Steering wheel hard to turn at idle - powers steering pump?

I have noticed recently that when I am about to pull out of a parking space (low RPM), it feels like I have no power steering. Driving normally, no problems.

Is my pump on it's way out?

Have you ever flushed the system?

Mine was acting funny so I took a turkey baster and sucked all of the old fluid I could, then filled it with new, cycled the steering lock to lock a few times. repeated 4 or 5 times. it seems to have done the trick

Nope, not done that yet. What fluid did you use? ATF right?

dexron..or mercron..

Use Motul Synthetic ATF!

And check the hose connections down at the rack (two fittings that are right at where the lines go through the engine crossmember) they've been known to loosen up and leak.

actually after driving to work, i realized the problem is not yet solved

steering actually seems to lock up a bit at idle engine rpm.

i did recently change belts, and the new belts are probably overtight and still seem to slip quite a bit

Mine does the same thing at idle.... I turn from lock to lock and near the end it gets bumpy..... I need to figure out how to flush the system.

My fluid was good. This morning, since it was cold, I heard my belt squeak at startup. I bet this is the problem.
