Default P/S pump going bad?

I have an 06 Sti , for the last few months its gotten colder
and along with the cold is a whine coming from the power steering area in my engine bay. I figure it has to be the pump since it whines when i turn the wheel, but it has gotten worse and just yesterday when i turn the wheel and and pushing the gas as well the steering wheel shakes..
I looked into getting a new p/s pump and they are about $500 from the local dealership, but I want to be sure that is the problem. also, how bad is it to drive without a p/s pump? or at the point im at?

I appreciate any input you might be able to give me
thanks

I assume your belt is not slipping and the fluid level is up? I'm sure someone may bring up the "bleed your pump" and change your fluid whatever. After those checks, abnormal noises from the pump most always means it's bad. If you see metallic flakes floating in the PS fluid reservoir, the steering rack is wearing out in a hurry.
Flush out the old fluid if you do replace.

I don't think the PS pump used on Subaru's is the most reliable unit made. Save some big time $$ and try www.rockauto.com for one.
