Default Fisker will buy GM engines for Karma car

Quote:
Executives of Fisker Automotive Inc. said today that they will buy from General Motors a powerful gasoline engine for their plug-in hybrid luxury sedan, due next year in North America.

If produced, the Fisker Karma would operate a lot like the upcoming Chevrolet Volt. The Karma will be an electric vehicle whose gasoline engine spins a generator that creates electricity for the batteries.

The engine that Fisker plans to buy from GM is a 2.0-liter, direct-injection, turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 260 hp. This is the same engine that is optional in high-performance versions of the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters.

"Given General Motors' global leadership in the parts and accessories space, the fact that it is already engineering parts for extended-range electric vehicles and its commitment to helping the environment, it was clear that this was the right partner for us," Fisker CEO Henrik Fisker said in a company statement.

Tom Stephens, executive vice president of GM powertrain and global quality, said GM sees "significant opportunity" in working with Fisker.

European delivery of the Karma is planned for 2010. Fisker's annual production is expected to reach 15,000, with half of sales expected overseas.

Fisker Automotive, of suburban Los Angeles, is a privately owned company backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Palo Alto Investors and an affiliate of the Qatar Investment Authority.

Crikey!

In a REEV with a large battery, the genset only needs to provide the AVERAGE power requirements.

With a 260hp motor.... I get the feeling this thing is going to be a rocket.
BMW 5-series competitor?

Anyone else find it interesting that Qatar is investing in a car company who's products will use almost no oil in their daily use?

What do you think will lubricate the motor and provide fuel to mix with air?
It is not an electric car, it is a hybrid.

It's going to have all electric drive. For the first 50 miles no fuel is used. After 50 miles the gas engine recharges the batteries.

For most trips, this car (like the Volt) will use no gas at all...

Wow, a 260HP battery charger! Wonder how many watts the generator is rated and the output of the drive motor?
