Default my car is killing me :(

hey guys, this is a nonstop issue with my car. hopefully you guys can help me figure it out.

lately, it's been harder and harder for my car to start. more recently, it won't start at all. tuesday, i was hoping that my car would start because i had an appointment at DS1. well, it didn't. i was in a hurry, and my only other option was putting in a new battery that i bought (optima red top). i really didn't want to put in the new battery because i had a feeling that the battery wasn't the cause of the car not wanting to start, but i had no other options.

i put in the battery, and the car fired up. started up and i drove to DS1. that was on tuesday. wednesday i drove to the train station, left my car for a few hours, went to school, and came back. started up fine. thursday drove to school, let it sit for a few hours, and drove home. friday i didn't drive it.

saturday, i drove to work, and let it sit from 9am to 3pm. came out at 3, and it didn't start. my friend came, hooked up his battery starter/charger thing (looks just like this: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02871988000P)

that gave power to my battery, meaning, all the lights/electric devices worked, everything lit up on the dashboard and cluster as it should, BUT as soon as i tried to start the car, it died, and the battery died (all the lights inside and out turned out), just like a dead battery.

we did this a few more times - hook up the device to the battery, all the lights turn on, as soon as i try to crank it - everything dies just like a dead battery.

so, we pushed the car a little bit and tried to start it that way. after a few times of pushing the car to give it a little speed, it finally started.

i've come to the conclusion that it's not a battery problem because i put my brand new optima in. now i'm thinking it's either the starter (maybe the alternator too??), and it has to be an electrical issue.

cliffnotes: i know it's long, i'm sorry, but i tried to go into as much detail as possible. please try to help me out, my car is dead, and i cannot drive anywhere. i'm screwed without your guys help.

thanks for all of the help, you guys really are a great community. --Arthur

edit: i know this might be the wrong section to post it, but i did it intentionally because i know that i will get the most feedback here.

What kind of noise did it make when trying to start? Did it crank, and just not turn over, or did it click or nothing?

Is your check engine light on at all?

I would guess the alternator. Take your car to one of the autoparts places and get it tested.

Start the car let run for a minute then take positive cable off battery while car is running, if car stalls after, your alternator is dead!!! Had it happen to my honda!

I also agree with it being the alternator that's bad. If you have any doubt, Autozone will test your alternator and starter for free.

This I would not recommend doing, as it can blow a diode in your alternator if it isn't the culprit, or cause other problems. If you want to check yourself and have a voltmeter, start the car and connect the voltmeter with the red clip touching the positive battery post and the black clip touching the negative battery post, if you see less than 12-13 volts, I would say the alternator is not working. If you can't get the car started to try this, just get it checked out at a place like Autozone.

thanks a lot guys for the help. so far i'm going to start out with testing the alternator (replacing if needed), testing the starter (replacing if needed), and getting new battery cables/clamps.

how difficult can it be to replace battery cables/clamps?

keep the suggestions coming. --arthur

its an 01 change the ALTERNATOR. It't not difficult either, and if you really want things to be more like a new car. Try a new fuel pump, nicer fuel injectors and fluids!

Many places like Advance, Autozone, etc. will check your electrical system for free.

nooo!!! dont take your positive cable off!!! that is ok to do on other cars but on newer ones you risk letting the gene out of your ecu...it sounds like a alternator..or a wire that is shorted somewhere draining your battery....go back to sears where you got it tsted from the first place tell them to check the alternator with the big maching not the small one ....and if not hook up a dmm in-line with your battery and cable(take positive cable off and hook it up in series) then turn it to amps scale and if you have a current draw of more than .2-.5 amps you have a parasitic draw my friend ...i would say check wiring aroung the turbo region, interfooler, and places like that sill stuff happens all the time like this...o and also clean your terminals to if they are corroded that would cause it to
