Default Starter just clicking....

I just rebuilt my ej22, everything is all plugged in, but when I try to start it the starter is just clicking. The battery is good, I even tried using my oter car to boost it, but no luck. The starter worked fine a few months ago. Any ideas?

Thanks,

do u have gas in the tank? sounds stupid but ive heard crazier. if the starter is clicking its getting voltage. but how much is the question. it could be the accual starter or it could be the solidoid. if its clicking and your battery is fine and all i would say solidoid. i had a car once that the solinoid went on its really easy to change if thats it. if you have a shop manual and a multi meter you should be able to search out whats faullty.

I will have to look into the silanoid tomorrow and see if it is gone. Maybe a little tap from a hammer might free it up. I'll look up the voltage and see if it's within spec.

Thanks,
Marco,

The starter should be getting a voltage around 12v and what ever your cold cranking amps is.

if its clicking, then the sollenoid is getting energized and moving the contacts into place but they could be corroded or burned. To check the solinoid, jump across it with a appropriate gauge wire while someone else turns the key to start and it should start right up. If it does, then try giving the solenoid a few good whacks with a screwdriver handle or small hammer. its not uncommon for a solenoid to accumulate some corrosion inside if its been sitting unused for a while. then try it without the jumper wire. worst case, if it starts with the jumper but not without it, swap it out.

Thanks for the explanation, it makes more sense now. So eactly which wire am I jumping? Am I putting a positive wire from the battery to the little starter wire? I think that little wire is a ground wire when it is on the sollenoid. I'll go give it a few trys and see what happens.

Thanks,

id have to see the solenoid to say for sure, but the starter + wire is usually a heavy wire, like an 8 or 6 AWG. Like half the thickness of a battery cable, roughly. It should go to the starter and the starter should ground itself through the engine via the starter body (no wire). The smaller wire on the solenoid is either a + or ground used to energize the solenoid and move the contacts. some even have two small wires, one for each, + and ground. You could jump from the battery positive terminal directly to the starter + wire, but that wont rule out the wiring from the ignition switch to the solenoid. Some cars even have a relay before the starter solenoid, that can also be at fault. narrow it down the best you can. if you try this out yourself, be sure its in Park or Neutral so you dont run yourself over.
