Default Volvo S60 Sports Sedan Concept: First Official Photograph

Quote:
Swedish automaker Volvo is offering us our first glimpse of the S60 Concept car ahead of the sports sedan's official debut at the Detroit Motor Show in early January 2009. The four-door-coupe concept's goal is to give us an indication of what the all-new 2010 Volvo S60 will look like when it's launched in the market early 2010. The first exterior picture that comes about a month after the release of an interior teaser photo shows that Volvo's designers came up with a pretty aggressive shape with a coupe-inspired silhouette and what appear to be suicide-rear-doors.

"The concept car's exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we've been even more daring – there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future," said Volvo Cars' design director, Steve Mattin. "The inspiration comes from the Swedish coastline's cliffs and seas," he added.

While the two teaser shots don't allow us to fully appreciate the vehicle's design, we must admit that the S60 Concept has certainly managed to capture our interest.

Expect the production version of the car to be based on the latest version of the Euro market Ford Mondeo with which it will share many engines including an array of diesel units, the 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine and most likely, Ford's forthcoming 1.6-liter turbocharged four pots.

I'm still waiting for the product that will pull me back into the volvo family. I don't think this will be it, but I do like the Jaguar-esque styling direction.

Looks nice so far. I just wish the recent models weren't so tall and heavy. It's amazing how much sheet metal is above the (large) wheel wells on some of the new sedans. I would like to cross some of the recent designs with an older 740il.

Meh. It's just a Legacy for the Scandinavian furniture crowd.

Aside from the "gotta have it" styling of the C30, I've never felt a compelling urge to actually look twice at any Volvo.

I like the interior rendering with the acrylic center console that wraps from the front of the car to the back. But I will withhold my final comments on this design for when I see actual production-ready photos.

Default New Volvo S60 Revealed

Quote:
Volvo’s new S60 will go on sale next September after its launch at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The firm has taken the unusual step of releasing pictures of the car four months ahead of the its launch, a move which is understood to be related to the announcement by Ford that Chinese car maker Geely is in the frame to buy Volvo.

The new car is very similar to the S60 Concept, retaining the low, coupe-style roof line. The front end, in particular, is nearly identical – only small changes to the shape of the lights and a higher bonnet line differentiate the production car.

Volvo hasn’t issued any pictures of the interior, but the car will use a productionised version of the concept’s cabin, with the same dashboard shape. The concept’s cantilevered rear-hinged rear doors have been replaced by conventional items.

Underneath the bodyshell the S60 is based on the Ford EUCD platform that is also used by the current Mondeo. Volvo is promising that the S60 will be the “sportiest and most dynamic Volvo ever,” and the project’s engineers are understood to have been working on the driveability of the S60 since the project’s inception.

A Volvo source said that the firm knew the previous car couldn't match the likes of the 3-series and the C-class, and that to successfully compete with these rivals driver appeal is crucial.

Unlike the previous S60, the new car is more conventionally sized to give Volvo a true rival for the likes of the BMW 3-series. The old car was awkwardly-sized between a 3-series and 5-series, and was based on a cut-down V70 platform, although it was a sales success in the first few years of the car’s life. There was no estate version, either, but expect the new S60 to get an estate variant in 2011.
The car will also be the first Volvo to be available with the firm’s new Pedestrian Detection technology, which can “see” pedestrians in the road and automatically apply the brakes to stop the car if the driver doesn’t react quickly enough

Looks really good. Hopefully if Geely wins the bidding they will advertise Volvo, sales could be a lot better if people knew what they were making now. The C30, S40, XC60, and now this all look great IMO. Hell even the new S80 doesn't look half bad. The problem is people still think boxy cars that come with a handicap placcard.

The S40 still looks kind of normal; when's that due to have its roof squished?

I really like the re-design.

I also like that they've reduced the size from the old one to position this new S60 against the BMW 3 series.

I don't care for it. I don't hate it by any means, but I don't like it. The front end seems pinched in and bland, and the side, just bland. And I know it is a Volvo, but............

If this is the 3 series fighter, where does that leave the S40?

I can't believe that Ford (even with Alan Mulally) is still stupid enough to keep Lincoln/Mercury on life support and sell Volvo. Just give the L/M dealers a Ford/Volvo franchise and call it a day.

Good point, at least get rid of mercury. Mercury is just rebranded models of old Fords. They still sell the grand marquis FFS. Make it Lincoln/Volvo would be a great idea.

I know Lincoln is too but at least they do some upgrades to it and not just put a different badge on.
