At this price you are 1/2 to 3/4 of the way to buying snow tyres:

I didn't see how they are held on. If they are so good and easy why didn't they show how?

^ I just went to the web site you posted and pulled up the price.

Your price is better, but I would still be cocerned how they are held on.

(I hate chains. I went to school in Klamath Falls and did a lot of skiing back then.)

Not a bad idea. I've lost and destroyed chains before. It's bad enough when they are $25-50 a set. BBS wheels are not cheap if the disk is mared...

You won't have any fun in the snow with traction on only one end of the car. Cascade Concrete isn't very forgiving.

I've driven FWD with chains, spun out and backed into a ditch. The front, sitting on the road clawed its way out after a few minutes to clear a path for the rear wheels with a shovel.

RWD is no better. Coming down from Timberline I went into a corner a little too hot and had terminal understeer at full lock and was tracking towards a rock wall. Pulled the parking brake to slow down and the I had to crank out all of that steering lock REAL FAST to keep the car in my lane once the front tyres got grip.

I don't think you want to buy 2 pair of those Spike Spiders.

The RE070's really suck in the snow...

Putting chains on summer tires is just stupid, imho. (if we are talking putting chains on two of the four summer tires, and leaving the other two bare, it's way past stupid)

You will get far better performance by going with either a snow, or at the very least, an all-season tire - just pick up some cheap rims and you are good to go.

Often you can get used winter tires from tire shops and wrecking yards. Find a matching set and a cheap set of rims that fit your car. Change'em before you leave and once you get back.

FYI, Spikes Spider video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNm3lOtehzw
