sick, i'm building a RWD dubx soon. i just cant decide on the power rang i want yet. on one side it would be alot of fun to drift anytime i lay into the throttle, but walk on anybody in the next lane on the HWY would be sick.

i wounder if the stock 5 speed would still be **** if it wasn't AWD

well I played with RWD for a little a little bit when I blew up my rear 4:11 and my spare 4:11 diff. I then tossed in a spare 4.44 and welded up a spare viscous center diff I had from a spare trans....NOTE lots of spares ....still blew up the rear end and then swap to an R180 with DSS "1000hp" axles, which I broke one of the axles (broke a weld and they repaired it for free, I had to pay shipping both ways) and broke my trans once that got back.
Then came the 6-speed and only had that on for about 6 months before the tear down for the project coupe.

RWD was fun but I wouldn't keep the car that way UNLESS I wanted it to purely have fun with. Trying to accelerate was a joke and breaking the rear tires free at 80mph is

Do you have an odd combination of STI and Evo VIII wheels on that car?

There is nothing wrong with that if there wasnt the association nobody would complain and they are nice strong wheels.

So what would make for a solid, reliable RWD subie?

if you really want to do it, do an R180 with DSS axles (my failure was a fluke, I think and so do they) or R200 with custom axles. Uprade the driveshaft to a CF unit as the u-joints on mine took some serious abuse, became loose. Also brake the rear rear...upgrade all bushings etc...it isn't use to that much tq trying to shift everything under the rear end.

I knocked the front ring gear off of my diff too but never got a chance to toss it on the dyno again to see if there was any noticable gain in power.

Do you have a write up or anything of what parts/steps you did to make it RWD? Is this on the 6spd r180 rear?

Stephan Verdier has been drifting his STI for the last several years with very minor mechanical issues. I think he’s gone through one tranny and a couple of axles. He’s the only one that has been consistently running in the top 32 in a Subaru.

Andrew

Your rear diff called and it wants to punch you in the throat.

Seriously, that's awesome.
