Rally Stuff WRC Wales RallyGB Dec 4-7 talk/results spoiler**

The Manufacturers’ Championship is still to play for on this final round, and both Citroen and Ford absolutely want it so will be pushing hard. The Ford is remarkably good in the expected conditions, as are their drivers Hirvonen and Latvala so they’ll be fast for sure.”

On what will be their 125th WRC event together with the Subaru World Rally Team, Petter Solberg believes his excellent working relationship with co-driver Phil Mills is critical to their success on this event.

“I like the rally a lot and we’re normally fast when it’s foggy or raining with lots of mud so I’m looking forward to it” said Petter Solberg. “I think pace notes play a huge part here. It’s about perfection with the notes and the way Phil gives them and helps with judging distances when visibility is poor. That’s where he is very strong. In the past we’ve generally always been fighting for a win or fighting at the top here. We had some good speed on Saturday and Sunday in Japan which gives us a positive going into GB. There are still a few little things we need to work on for sure, but there was another small improvement with the car in the last test.”

“GB is one of the trickiest rallies and one that takes probably a few years to get used to, but last year we had some good speed there” said Chris Atkinson. “I’m still cautious as it’s hard to know after a one day test where you really stand and we’ve got a few things still to sort out, but if you have confidence you can go a long way in the tricky conditions. Especially this year with some new stages I think confidence is the most important thing. It’s obviously quite difficult driving in fog, and there’s a fair chance of it being icy as well so they’ll be some of the most tricky and unpredictable conditions we’ve driven in. We’ll go there with the strategy that we’ll drive as fast as we can from the start, as we always do. I don’t think only having a remote service on the first day will have much impact on that strategy though as if you have a problem on any rally you’re usually out of the running anyway.”

This is my favorite rally of the season. What is the best way for us rally-starved Americans to see it? Anyone broadcasting it over here or are the torrents the only way?

Somewhat OT, if your a member of Racing Underground they are going invite only and will be booting members next year if they are leeching, and have a poor ratio. So get your seeding going....

Can't wait! Go SWRT please podium.

I hope Loeb will have fun screwing around on the course and showboat for entertainment value since he already won.

Who says there's no action in recce?

WRC » Loeb goes off in Rally GB recce.
Tuesday, 2nd December 2008

Sebastien Loeb slids into a ditch during the reconnaissance.

Citroen team leader Sebastien Loeb has gone off on the road during the reconnaissance for the Wales Rally GB today, the final round in the 2008 World Rally Championship.

According to early reports the Frenchman apparently slid into a ditch on ice and snow as he came out of the 35.34 kilometre Myherin test, which will run on Friday as SS3 and SS6.

Loeb and co-driver Daniel Elena both escaped unharmed in the incident although their recce car ended up on the wrong side.

A number of competitors meanwhile are understood to have struggled on day one of the recce and some drivers have had to be towed out of Myherin due to the ice and snow.

More to follow as and when we get it..

What odds will Paddy Power give me on a stage being canceled because of 'excessive snow' like in Japan?

AKA "Petter off stage 1, 30 seconds from start line; will restart under super rally"

Quote:
WRC » 'Positive' Solberg: I'll 'risk it' to win.
Thursday, 4th December 2008

Subaru's 'forgotten' star Petter Solberg is hopeful of putting an end to a gaping 51-rally winless streak on this weekend's Wales Rally GB, the final round of the 2008 World Rally Championship.

As he endeavours to make sure that 2008 is not the third successive season in which he has failed to reach the top step of the podium in the World Rally Championship, Petter Solberg has vowed to ‘risk it' and ‘go absolutely mad' on Wales Rally GB this weekend, the final meeting on the calendar.

Incredibly, the Norwegian has now not triumphed in some 51 rallies, with his most ‘recent' success coming, perhaps appropriately, on British shores in 2005. Since then there have been just eight rostrum appearances – only one of which has come this season, as the 34-year-old's fortunes have plummeted hand-in-hand with those of employers Subaru.

The debut of the 2008-spec Impreza has, however, led to cause for optimism within the Prodrive camp, with Solberg finishing runner-up to record-breaking five-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb on the car's maiden outing on the Acropolis Rally at the beginning of June, and subsequently stringing together seven straight points-scoring results.

Though none of those finishes have been higher than fourth, there was an encouraging run on Rally Japan last time out with four fastest stage times. Moreover, with Solberg's breakthrough WRC success having come on British soil six years ago – his first of four consecutive triumphs on the event – and with co-driver Phil Mills being a born-and-bred Welshman, hopes are high of a final flourish to end what has been another trying campaign.

“Obviously it's been quite hard for everybody,” the 2003 World Rally Champion mused. “We should have been faster – we can all see why and where – but a lot of it is down to the homologation. We can give a lot of excuses, but at the end of the day we just have to improve to get Subaru back to the top again and in the fight.

“The team have done some good things to the car before this rally, and the feeling is better. With just a couple more improvements now I think we can be more consistently up at the top and fighting for many stage wins. We'll just take this rally for now, and then work on fixing the rest of the details over the winter.

After a turbulent start to Wales Rally GB, Chris Atkinson and Stéphane Prévot are in sixth position overall, with Petter Solberg and Phil Mills just 0.5 seconds behind in seventh.

The morning’s stages had already been shortened significantly after an official decision made last night owing to the amount of ice covering the roads. Following an inspection of the stage just before the WRC crews were due to start it, even the shorter version was deemed too slippery and the stage was cancelled, much to the dismay of the 8,000 ticket holders who had travelled to mid-Wales.

^yup not like the good ole days of wrc when the went no matter what !
----------------------------------------

Mikko Hirvonen's hopes of triumphing on this weekend's Wales Rally GB – the final round on the 2008 World Rally Championship calendar – have been dealt a hammer-blow after the Finn rolled his BP Ford World Rally Team Ford Focus WRC on Sweet Lamb 2.

The day's second run through Sweet Lamb was actually only the third competitive stage of the opening day after both runs through Hafren were cancelled due to icy and dangerous conditions.

WTF x 67....???!!!

This is f-ing ridiculous, canceling stages in a rally because the roads are slippry! Japan was bad enough, this GB foolishness would be even sillier if it wasn't so pathetic.

I know, I know...there are tire limits and WRC teams have to nomintate what tires they will use long before the rally. But crikey, Rally GB has a longstanding history of having snowy/icy conditions...you'd think SOMEBODY at the teams would remember that and keep a few snows as part of their tire quiver.

Sheesh, what's next, cancel WRC stages because it's raining? Ooh jeepers, it's dusty and hard to see, bettAr cancel the rally, quick!

This is the WRC, not NASCAR. (he said hopefully)

Comon Petter!

Safety seems a priority for organizers. Though they're taking away some of the things I love about rallying when they cancel because of these weather conditions. Remember when spectators could snap photos in the middle of the road just before the cars nearly run them over?
