Unhappy sigh, yep another EJ20G cold start thread

So aside from the "usual" IAC issues, latley the cranking on my EJ20G has been worse and worse.

Today it just clicked once each time I turned the key. Left it alone to start my other car and heard a clicking under the dash every couple of seconds (relay?).

Then after about 5 minutes it started but almost stalled. After work today I'm bringing the alternator and battery to get checked but I doubt it is either of those. Will install a spare starter this weekend as well just in case.

Any ideas from the NASIOC community?

Thanks,
-Mike.

Sounds like your battery may not have enough cold cranking amps. Ive experianced this before, the relays will fire off and the car doesnt seem to have enough power to crank it over.

Thanks for the feedback.

Brought both in at lunch and battery-replace, alternator- only putting out about 3 amps(?)- basically replace. So, um yeaaaa.

Battery is free 3 yr replacement from Sears;Alternator I'm watching a few on e-bay.

trust me...do a compression test. latley my car had done the same thing....then it started running more and more like crap. so i did a a compression test......tunerd out cyl 4 had 32psi.......sux. all the other 3 were up at 151 acroos the boards.

check cyl 4 first and see what it turns out to be. it is def worth a shot. my ringlands blew out, and currently i have my motor out of the car and rebuilding it. ej20g going to be freshly rebuilt.

compression has nothing to do w/ the clicks he's hearing , start w/ the battery ,then check starter connections Alternator only comes into play once the car has been started & is running

yeah belive it or not i heard the clicks also, sounds like a relay under the dash clicking on and off. i know this. the thing is, it kept getting harder and harder to crank for no reason. new battery, starter, alt...i bought alot of stuff and still had the problem. i rechecked all the wiring that ECS did for me, and it was perfect....so i just was like "hmm i wonder what my compression results are" so i did a test and come to find out it was 150-151-151-32

Guys, look a few posts up... both battery and alternator are bad.

After I replace those I can move onto other things.

Thanks,
-Mike.

naa, i put 7K miles on a ej18/22t hybrid that was boosted with no EMS.. i aint scared of nothing!

i find it funny i had little to no problems with my homemade turbo kit equipped impreza but these factory turbo motors are crapping out and having problems.

if i had the time i would def buy a jdm ej20 motor and use it for a na turbo kit build up. I hear them ej20k heads flow nice

Lightbulb

Truthfully this car has given me less problems than my new MY02 WRX when I had it... barely any issues for the 2.5 years I've owned this car.

Now back on topic- borrowed an alternator and used the same battery and the car started right up this morning. It was warmer than usual tho (about 40). Bought another alternator and getting a gel cell batt. this week.
