Default Need help with high egt's

I'm having some problems with my car, as I have detailed in this thread.

The EGT's are racing upwards of 1000C and would continue to climb if I didn't lift off the throttle. When I lift, the EGT's will drop to below what the gauge can read. I have a UTEC with the wideband and run speed density. It has been a long time since I have messed with this car so I do not remember how to correctly log useful information. Which screen do I capture? Is there a quick and easy tutorial out there that I can read to refresh my memory on it?

I'm guessing it is much more than a tuning issue, but maybe with some logs somebody can help guide me in the right direction to getting things right. I do notice that under partial throttle that the car is performing pretty much normal. EGT's stay under 800C and the car responds fine. If I give it anything more it'll stumble a bit and the EGT's rocket up.

How quickly does i climb or drop? My EGT did the same thing bc it was getting flooded and it eventually gave out. If its rising and falling quickly it might be flooded or going out. It might be worth it to at least take it out and look at it.

On the utec, when you're at the main screen hit transfer->capture text file in hyperterminal. Set your filename and hit ok. Then hit 1 for the "1" logger. I like that one but maybe wrx utec is different, you could try 1-6. When you're done logging hit ESC I think to get the utec back to the main menu. And click transfer->capture text file->stop.

Then come back here, do [ code ] without the spaces, copy paste the interesting parts of your logs, and do [ / code ] after it.

What do you mean flooded? Like the outside is submerged in snow? The gauge is rising and dropping just as quickly as your needle would while drag racing. Something is wrong with the engine, as it is running poorly so I'm not sure it is just a faulty EGT gauge.

Here are a couple quick cuts from a log I just took. I think I may have had an issue with overboosting and that was responsible for the high egt's. I tightened up the vacuum hose to the MBC and turned the boost down. The car ran much better after that, but it was just a brief trip down the road and back. I still see that I'm probably too lean, which is probably why I was still getting some instances where the EGT's would shoot up over 800C again.

Now I know very little about tuning, so what changes should I make to get safer? Oh, and this is a built motor. It has always had instances of knock, but nothing I ever feel or notice. It was always just assuming that the harshness over the motor would create false knocks.

How big is your MAF? your maf volts are super low


yeah there is a leak before the turbo. The MAF voltage hardly changes under boost!

I would suspect a bad MAF before I suspect a leak. I have a Blitz intake, so that is what it sits in. I took the Samco inlet pipe out last night and inspected for leaks and found none. Does the MAF play that big a role in speed density? I thought it used the manifold pressure instead of airflow through the MAF.

I do have an erratic idle, especially in extreme hot or cold temperatures. Would this be due to a faulty front O2? You really think I should look into replacing it?

I do see where it is lean. This new motor never really got much pro tuning done to it. Any recommendations on where and how much fuel i should be adding? Is it possible for me to just keep taking logs and have more knowledgeable people guiding me through what to change?

From everything you have said, I think the safest thing you can do is replace the MAF and drive the car - out of boost - to a tuner.
