Default Wagoner will drive Volt to Senate hearing

Quote:
From: http://www.freep.com/article/2008120...ESS01/81203081

WASHINGTON — General Motors Corp. will press a Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid prototype into service Thursday on Capitol Hill, where GM Chairman Rick Wagoner will use a prototype to emphasize the company’s technology.

GM spokesman Greg Martin said Wagoner will drive a prototype Volt wearing the sheet metal of the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze to the Senate committee hearing on the company’s request for $18 billion in emergency loans.

GM will also bring a show version of the production Volt to the hearing. The car is designed to travel on electricity for 40 miles, when a gas engine kicks in to recharge the batteries, power electric motors and provide a few hundred miles more of driving range.

The automaker says it needs $4 billion before the end of the month and up to $12 billion by the end of March, but it has vowed to spend $758 million between 2009 and 2012 on the Volt and its technology.

GM has said it’s on track to start building the Volt in late 2010. The automaker lobbied Congress hard in September to pass a $7,500 tax credit for plug-in hybrid vehicles; the Volt will likely cost more than $30,000
That makes up for the private jet...right?

He will drive it, for the last few miles in DC. The car will travel on a flat bed all the way as it would never make it to DC on it's own, at least not in time. This thing is designed as a commuter car not something you would like to take a 600 mile trip in.

At this point, it's pretty much reading as sarcasm to me in terms of how over-the-top these guys are "compensating" for the private jet incidents.

Funny you should mention 600 mile trip. That is the targeted range on one tank of gas for the Volt. It is designed to be a sedan than anyone can use, city commuting or not.

Probably the first time the CEO has driven a GM product more than a lap or two around the test track in years.. HA HA - Find me a CEO that actually owns and drives an american car and I'll be shocked.

It would be interesting if one of those CEO's was caught making the trip in a competitors car. When asked why - he could respond, I wan't to know what we are doing wrong - no better way than to spend some quality time in the car thats beating us.

You do know that it doesn't have a limited range right? It can drive forever as long as you keep putting gas in it, just like any normal car.

I heard about this on the radio this morning.

Last time, they all flew in private jets to ask for $25B
This time, they're all driving and asking for $34B
What's the extra $9B for?............gas money?

Now if the ford CEO drives there in a Focus RS, gets several speeding tickets on the way, and says "this will be here in 2010." I will allow them to be bailed out.
