Default Audi pull out of ALMS

we may just have to start one big thread to keep up with who's pulling out of where.

Audi pulls out of ALMS

By Steven English Friday, December 5th 2008, 11:43 GMT

Audi R10Audi has today announced that it will not contest the American Le Mans Series next season with its new R15 TDi.

The German manufacturer had already confirmed that it would not defend its Le Mans Series title in Europe in 2009, citing money saving as the reason.

With no full ALMS campaign either, the R15's only confirmed outings next year will be in the Sebring 12 Hours in March and the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

Audi motorsport boss Wolfgang Ullrich praised the ALMS - which the marque had competed in for nine seasons - and the Champion team that ran the R8 and R10 in America.

"The decision to withdraw was a very difficult one," he said. "The extraordinary dedication and precision of Team Champion was the key to Audi's victories over the last few years in America.

"We achieved an unprecedented winning series together - since the 2000 season Audi has won the LMP1 title nine times in succession."

The recent announcements mean that Audi's motorsport involvement next season is, at the moment, restricted to the DTM, Sebring and Le Mans, and the customer programme with the new R8 GT3 car.

was the R8GT3 built to Euroean rules? No way it's going to make a showing in the ALMS without serious revelopment and cash?

I'm sure the corvette team is on their heels to the exit as well.

Corvette is pulling out of GT1 to go racing in GT2.

So how does this effect Honda's desire to racing in P1 if the only people they can claim to beat are semi-funded privateers with three year old cars?

Interesting times. Who would have thought that escalating costs, and the take over by manufacturer run teams would cause instability in multiple series? Oh wait...most everyone with some history on their side.

I also noticed Penske is going to run a single car in Daytona Prototype, Porsche powered.

Being as though I've already purchased my Sebring tickets, I was about to sh** bricks when I saw the thread title...at least I'll get to see it there. I wasn't planning on going to le mans until 2010 but I just may have to bump that up to this year pending the excitement at Sebring.

Another sad day...

Ferg,

I think Penske may be running both efforts...? ALMS and GA.

Apparently just the Grand AM series. Dyson are switching from Porsche as well but staying in the ALMS so it doesn't look to be all Penke's decision.

the way the press release was written, it still leaves open the possibility that there could be an Audi privateer effort in ALMS. Champion did do this before with the R8.

I can assure that if and when Subarus sales start nose diving and the company starts bleeding money the rally programs are going to get very very nervous.
