Officially Official: Mazda3 five-door hatchback gets real

Posted Dec 3rd 2008 12:57PM by John Neff
Filed under: Wagons/Estates, Euro, Hatchbacks, Mazda, Misc. Auto Shows

Mazda has officially taken the wraps off its five-door hatchback version of the redesigned Mazda3 at the Bologna Motor Show today. As you can see in the gallery of new high-res pics below, the Mazda3 five-door gets the same swoopy sheetmetal as its four-door brethren, including the super happy smiley front end face. What's new is an extended roofline that drops down at a steep angle to create a wagon-esque profile. With a D-pillar that kinks up at a swept back angle, the look is very similar to that of a Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix that's been stepped on by a giant. The new cargo capacity will no doubt be appreciated by families who can put every extra cubic foot to good use, and if the current generation Mazda3 is any indication, this will also be the basis for the Mazdaspeed model.

At the moment, all the specs for the new Mazda3 five-door hatchback are for the European market, so don't expect its new 2.2L and carryover 1.6L turbo diesel engines to be available in the U.S. Europeans will also have a choice of 1.6L and 2.0L gas engines, though we expect the U.S.-spec model to offer the same 2.0L and new 2.5L four-cylinder engines as the sedan. Check out the official press release from Mazda after the jump for more details and the high-res image gallery below for more shots of the new Mazda3 five-door hatchback.

I don't think it's terrible, but I definitely like the last gen better. That ****-eating grin is too much, tho.

It makes the new STI looks so much better. Wow that thing is "FUGLY" They used the same stupid looking front end on the new Mazda 6. Can't they come up with something different for each of their cars or are they really that creatively limited?

They did that so they could make it a $500 option. The price adds a little perspective.

I liked it more when I first saw teaser shots of the sedan, but now I'm glad I got the current gen Speed3. Maybe the 2010 Speed3 will look better.

They've worked very hard to make them look the same.

It's called brand identity.

---

I don't get all the bitching. It looks like a big brother to the 2 and a little brother to the 6. Job well done, IMO.

I have no doubt the Speed 3 will be awesome based on this car. The fact that this car is so cutesy means that they will likely have to change even more in the front to differentiate the Speed version than they did with the previous generation.

I just can't get past that ridiculous "grin"...reminds me of the Neon's "hi"...ugh! I could do without auto manufacturers' need to make their vehicles fascias so human face-like.

This car is gonna be like the new Maxima
... Everyone bitched and complains about it in photos (that happen to be taken at angles in which you would never really see the car in), but once you see one in person it actually look pretty decent. Actually, I think this car looks more than just decent. It's got a very different, exciting look to it. The color they picked is awful though.

I like it, but I like the current version better. It looks like the off spring of a one night stand in a cheap motel room between the new 6 and new Matrix.
