I was expecting to see that same dumb set of "mini" cars.

Instead I see some dumb HDR crap.

...at least the non HDR images are decent.

Correct, due in large part to DIY "tutorials" that tell you a quick and crappy (and completely WRONG) way to do it.

Resulting in 90% of people who "do" HDR not knowing what true HDR photography is, and therefore it got ruined.

EDIT: throwing in a couple more "" marks because ""'ing stuff is "fun".
