Hey All,

Just got this car and went to drop in a K&N. I noticed that after the stock cloth filter is some other sort of filter before the MAF.

It can be seen in this photo to the left, this is the piece with the MAF.

I assume this belongs but never seen anything like that before or see it in the manual. So im just checking this is correct to have both this and my K&N filter. Thanks.

Tom

PS: The previous owner wasnt that big on checking for nuts....

Can anyone confirm this is a factory piece and I'm not stacking two air filters? Or have something unnecessary in there?

It doesn't come out that easy so I kind of assume it belongs.

Do your engine a favor and don't use a k&n. Problem solved. I have no useful info about the filter in question.

I know there is a love/hate relationship with K&N filters but im going to go off my own experiences

Used a K&N in my previous vehicle for 150,000 miles. No MAF failure from "too much oil" and the engine runs strong. So what are people going to tell me that contradicts my own experiences???

That is an extra fine filter installed at the factory to increase MAF reliability. Not normally requiring service unless you run without the pleated filter in front of it.

MAF failures? What was your previous vehicle? And I assume your going by your own anecdotal evidence.

Yes, it's part of the PZEV package. All it does is adsorb (as opposed to aBsorb) fuel vapors that may escape from the intake manifold when the engine is not running. When the engine is running, the hydrocarbons are released and sucked back into the engine.

Ok cool, thanks Crosstrek!

My previous car was a Nissan Sentra. I only mentioned the MAF thing because one of the complaints about K&N could be MAF failure. Im just saying I ran my vehicle for 150,000 miles with one and had zero issues.

I've had a K&N on all my vehicles now for going back over a decade. I've never had any issues and will continue to use them in all my vehicles. I installed one in my 14 Impreza a couple of weeks after buying it and definitely noticed a boost in acceleration.

I agree. Thanks for the filter update everyone. Didnt want a K&N debate, just wondering what that thing was.
