Default Ford attacks website for infringment *Merged*

better hope Subaru doesnt come looking for money.

http://www.therangerstation.com/foru...ad.php?t=32801

cause ford sure did.

(also dont know if this is the right section, should it be moved?)

Quote:
Ford is making me change the name of The Ranger Station and pay them $5,000. I have to sign an agreement as well and they want it all by the 19th of this month.

Ford feels that we are infringing on their trademarks and violating their intellectual property rights because we use 'Ranger' in our name.

Apparently it's ok for Ranger Boats, Polaris Ranger and the Lone Ranger.

We are not the first to get attacked by this:

http://www.michiganmustang.com/fordattacks.html

The question is, where do we go from here?

How are we possibly going to rename the site and still be able to attract Ranger owners, when Ford doesn't want us using their name.

To clarify:

Ford wants $5,000 AND therangerstation.com domain name.

Thats really weak on Fords part, they're gonna go hassling people who actually like thier products for $5k? Pretty sure nasioc is safe though.

No worries. Subaru actually LIKES it's customers. I wonder if tauruscarclub.com got hit, too, or the SHO forums.

Thats ridiculous--I'm a member on that and the other big Ranger site (have a juiced Ranger show truck). Ford is absurd, I had a $34K Explorer EB that had the tranny go at 63K miles and the engine at 105K, Ford didnt do a thing for me---I had all maintenance records, didnt beat it. Several calls to their customer service and trips to the dealer got me nothing but a big 'oh well sorry bout your luck'. Fords customer relations=AWFUL. And they wonder why theyre going under......

Subaru did go after the STi forum and made them change the name due to copy right infringment. I can't remember the original name, but I'm sure someone can jump in and remind me.

SERIOUSLY?!? I lose more respect for that damn company every day. I can't imagine what kind of fit of mental retardation came up with that idea:

"Hey! We need some cash flow. I know! Let's go to all the online enthusiast communities who support our products and make them pay to mention our name!"

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

its better to be better than the worst than the worst, wow that was confusing but makes sense (its better to be "better than the worst" than it is to be "the worst") hmm, yeah that makes sense.

still i think subaru is a great company that is in touch with its consumers and its market base. where as ford, isnt.

Wow... just wow - that is moronic. 2nd stupid thing I've heard a company say about / do to their customers this week (first mel karmazin told XM/Sirius subscribers unhappy with the new lineups to basically just shut-up and keep paying so they can continue to not provide the channels those customers wanted). It's amazing how little common sense some people in business have.

I can see them requesting the domain if the site could accidentally get traffic the company wanted (like wrxsti.com or something) or was concerned about it's image because people might mistake it for a company sponsored site - but they could reach out and work it out amicably... not demand $5k and the website! Crazy.

He asks "where do we go from here?" Hopefully to buy a Tacoma.

PS - these are the PR geniuses that flew private jets to ask for a taxpayer funded bailout, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised.

PPS - I love how a Ford banner ad has appeared at the bottom of the page we're all ripping them on.

If they do this enough, they won't need the $124M bailout. Backup plan!!

After some googling it looks like this may not be Ford - this Utah law firm appears to be infamous for sending out a flurry of threatening letters and hope some people just get scared and send them money.

I think these letters could more than likely be safely ignored.

You know... When I first saw the original link, that flashed through my mind for a second. You may be right.

^^^

Edit: I just saw the above post. I'm interested to see if the website ever actually receives a response directly from Ford.

actually from what i have found, its a legit law firm that specializes in this type of stuff, its not a joke, nor a scam, this is a real lawsuit against a website.

Did you know that SOA went after the "Subaru Challenge" and won't let the organizers use their name anymore? SOA can be just as dumb as the rest of 'em.

Sadly, if it goes to court, Ford will win.

Look at nissan.com. Guy named Nissan owned the site with the registered domain name with it having nothing to do with automobiles. Nissan Motors tried suing him every which way, mostly to bankrupt him to the point where he couldn't afford to defend himself.

Eventually the guy won the battle and kept the name. Then he later got jerked back into court when he started selling car parts on his site. That's what got him in trouble.

Similar situation here.

Here's what I'd recommend:

1. Keep the domain registered, but either don't use it, or let it relate to anything other than automobiles.
2. Do not pay the money (how the hell did they come up with the $5k figure anyway?!?)
3. Move the active enthusiast board to TRS.com.

Um... subaru has done this to quite a few enthusiast sites as well.

iwsti was not always iwsti..... had Impreza in the domain

northursalia.com used to be ravensblade-impreza

Intellectual property rights are touchy

super touchy.

Doesn't really seem the same. I mean, that sounds like an actual real sanctioned event.
