Default Head Gasket issues

I posted on a coolant leak earlier in the week. It turns out the head gasket went bad at 86,000 miles and is leaking coolant out the back of the cylinder head. It turns out this is a common problem and even has a website devoted to Subaru Head Gasket problems. Interesting to note that SOA has a TSB for the 2.5 motor up to 2002. I called the dealer and they said that the motor was revised for 2004 and they have not seen this issue since.

So anyone with a 2003 is basically hung out to dry. I called SOA and there is a slight chance they might help defray the cost, but the dealer has to confirm all maintenance records. Unfortunately, I live 2 hours from the dealer and have done my own maintenance for smaller items and an independent shop for more extensive maintenance. I am not overly optimistic they will support the maintenance even though it has been well maintained and I have recorded everything, including every tank of gas.

I realize I am passed factory warranty, but if there is a known problem and you exclude one year in the Technical Service Bulletins there should at least be some effort to acknowledge the problem and retain a Subaru customer. I was looking at the new Forrester to replace my wife's 98 Outback... with this type of reliability I am having my doubts.

Unfortunately, this is a common problem with naturally aspirated 2.5 engines. When changed coolant did you add the little bottle of Subaru Coolant conditioner? If you did then you might have a better argument.

I wish I had some sort of good news.... Good luck!

I found out about the Subaru Coolant after I read TSB's for Subaru's up to year 2002. My Baja is a 2003 so I was not aware of this until after the fact.

I generally don't read TSB's that do not pertain to my year and model. Unfortunately, I believe I am at the raw end of the deal even though SOA neglected to include 2003 motors when the changes to the 2.5 motor didn't happen until 2004.
