Default Lightning GT electric sport vehicle coming in 2010

Quote:
Effort on the battery-propelled Lightning GT sports vehicle is now concentrated on the manufacture of two development experimental vehicles by April next year, as announced by the 4-man crew behind the vehicle. The Lightning GT experimental vehicles will permit a series of testing and development in the spring of next year, which will include the proving of motors, batteries, chassis and electrical control systems, to be finished on schedule for deliveries early in 2010.

The Lightning GT has the opportunity to break the mold for electric vehicles because it will be propelled by four autonomous ‘in-wheel’ electric motors, instead of a unit that is centrally installed. Provided by British company PML Flightlink, the four 160 hp Hi-Pa motors can generate torque in excess of 500lb-ft each. Since they’re mounted in each wheel, they act both as engine and drivetrain for the vehicle, negating the necessity for a typical transmission. Although the motors can slow down the vehicle, however, for greater safety, the Lightning GT will come with regular brake discs and calipers.

This provides a great challenge to the chassis tuners of the Lightning GT, since there are more unsprung weight than in a regular sports vehicle. The electric motor itself tips the scales at 25kg. Impressive performance is expected from the Lightning GT. Its producers have foreseen that it will be competent to sprint from 0-60 mph (96 km/h )in less than 4.0 seconds and will have a maximum speed of 130 mph which is limited electronically.

The batteries utilized by the Lightning GT are the NanoSafe nano titanate provided by Altairnano, an American company. The batteries is supposed to provide a longer life span in contrast to both lithium ion and nickel metal hydride ones, and employing a three-phase 480v power supply, can be charged up to 80 percent in about four minutes. It is anticipated by the company that the vehicles will be able to attain a range of 200 miles between charges.

The history of Lightning Car Company is connected with the Lightning sports vehicle of technical director Arthur Wolstenholme, which came out in 2000 as a 325bhp V8-powered sports vehicle with a carbon fiber unitized construction.

The electric Lightning GT may be his largest and most important venture until now, however, equipped as it is with the most current electric powertrain technology will most probably retail at a price range of between £120,000 and £150,000. In spite of a tremendously triumphant inauguration at the London motor show, LCC is still seeking for partners in the Lightning GT. The final specifications of the vehicle are yet to be determined, or to concur where it will be manufactured.

It is LCC’s plant to construct the Lightning GT in the UK and the company is contemplating manufacturing it under agreement with a UK engineering expert with extra ability.

I'd rock the silver one in a second... the launches must be INCREDIBLE. My dad is fairly heavily invested in Altairnano also, maybe he'll get one

Definitely looks British. I'm quite interested to see where this in-wheel motor concept goes in the future. I think I saw a wicked fast Mini using this setup a while back.

Can someone explain why there's no need for a transmission? I understand that electric motors are always at peak power, whereas petrol engines only at their most efficient within a limited rpm range; but wouldn't it be beneficial to keep the motor from having to spin so fast and generating as much heat as it seems like it should?
