Default BD5 lacking power.

I drive my Legacy about everyday but all of sudden the car feels very very very under powered. I was thinking maybe it's the trans, spark plugs, spark plug wires, or just the motor going bad. Has any ever gone thru this or knows what's happening? All help welcome and Thank you in advance.

engines typically don't just "go bad" all of a sudden, unless it's electrical. when was the last time any service was done? did you get a bad tank of gas?

I got the standard gas for the car. It now feels like maybe the trans is going. Not sure what I might need. When I really step on the gas most of the time the car will just rev but it won't pick up speed.

i have had 2 vehicles do similar things, especially the revving but not downshifting when given full gas (auto trans). They were both very restricted Cats. How many miles on the cat? neither were subaru's, however. one was a pontiac the other a ford ranger.

well IF it turns out to be the cat, thats hardly "your car dying". and for 197,000 miles, id say you were fortunate to have it last that long. A new cat isnt that expensive, even if you go OEM. Or going catless is an option. Here in FL (hello neighbor), they dont give a **** about the environment.

Where are you located in FL. Maybe you can drive my car and get a feel for what I'm talking about. I'll go under my car in the mourning and remove the cat and drive around to see if it fixes the problem.

im in orlando, so i dont think that will work. Keep in mind, removing the cat may cause no O2 sensor data to the ECU (depends on your O2 sensor locations), which in itself, can cause other problems.

Don't think maybe it can be the auto trans fuse? Or maybe another fuse?

If the engine revs freely, it may be the trans (do you have a 5MT or a 4EAT?).
If the engine won't rev freely, it could be:
Bad gas
Bad plugs
Clogged CAT
Etc.......

I have 4EAT. The car won't rev freely. When I watch the RPM it will jump then stop, the jump then drop, then jump up high. I had a guy tell me it maybe the #3 plug wire or plug itself not firing. And now when I idle it has a thumping sound and I can feel it in the car.

If it's a bad plug or ignition wire, you should get a misfire CEL.

How many miles on the fuel filter?
The thumping sound, is it a solid sound or more like a metallic sound?
Any recent work done on the car, if so, what work?
