you were right, the thermostat is located in the housing where the lower radiator hose attaches to the block. I believe there are 2 10mm bolts holding it in.

driver side, lower, right near the fans. if it is indeed the water pump to block seal, it'll be more involved to change, but it's not too bad.

doesnt make sense to me the thermostat/housing gasket spontaneously went bad, more likely the leak is higher up and flowing down to the housing making it like the the source

wish i had a cooling system schematic...

am not in a position to replace all the parts, think i can get away with just replacing the pump?

dealer is quoting me about $900 for the repair

am taking it back for a pressure test on thursday

I did all those parts (water pump, 3 belts, TB tensioner, thermostat) for ~$325[or less] and 1/2 a day.

I wish I had a business trip to Ashburn soon, I would bring tools and make a few $$ as well as save you some bucks. (I have 5 customer sites in Sterling/Ashburn area).
