Default Porsche Follows Audi's Lead and Abandons ALMS For 2009

http://jalopnik.com/5110187/porsche-...team-from-alms
Quote:
Porsche has said it will no longer be sponsoring an LMP2 team in next year's American Le Mans Series, despite winning the last three LMP2 championships.

News of Porsche pulling its winning RS Spyder from prototype racing follows the surprising news of Audi's departure from LMP1. Like Porsche, Audi was also incredibly successful in the series. There's no explanation for why either team pulled out of the North American series. The most obvious reason is the Carpocalypse, though it is possible the company is looking to compete in another series.

There's some good news in the wings as ALMS says that GT2 will be joined by another manufacturer in the near future, in addition to the return of Corvette and the debut of BMW. What could be joining the Porsches and Ferraris? Perhaps the Lexus LF-A? We'll just have to wait and see.

This was reported on at Petit Le Mans by me and most other sites that follow the series the first week of October, and the title is alarmist and incorrect as they don't have any cars in LMP2 for 2009, but still have two factory teams in GT2.

The first line in the quotes says "Porsche has said it will no longer be sponsoring an LMP2" and at the end it says they will be running GT2.

BTW...I do follow the series and all those sites. I never saw anything posted until today.

Porsche Follows Audi's Lead and Abandons ALMS For 2009 seems a little bit inaccurate, no?

Then have a mod change it if you want to cry about it.

I still don't see how it is incorrect. They are following Audi's lead by removing their top cars and leaving the lower class ones (which cost less to run) in it.

No the **** they aren't! They were out a month before Audi announced they were leaving.

No, not crying about it -- just hate when people post stupid, alarmist things that aren't true.

As far as I remember from grade school, if Johnny has ten apples and you take away five of them, he still has five apples, rather than no apples.

If the Porsche factory isn't racing in LMP2, but is racing in GT2, that doesn't constitute a pull out, correct?

Porsche is taking a year off to build a hybrid LMP1 car for 2010, so no, they aren't following Audi's lead.

Yeah they announced quite a while back that Penske/Porsche were gone from P2.... but it's recent news that Dyson has moved to Mazda and won't be running the RS Spyders next year. Will the Dutch team (sorry, can't remember the crazy name) be running RS Spyders in LMS and at Le Mans next year, or are they really gone?

If they do, they might be down a driver as Jos is in trouble with the law.

van Merkestjin (or something like that!) has had one car for sale, and their crew chief is rumored to have purchased the spare car. He also said he wanted to buy and run an R10, so who knows if he's for real or just highly ambitious.

Essex sold theirs and Horag had their car for sale and their unfinished spare chassis also up for sale. No Spyders are known at this point to be running in Yurrup or Murrica.

Well damn it... now my RS Spyder hat is outdated

Of course, the only person that has ever commented on it thought it was referring to the 550 Spyder

It's hard to find anyone as obsessed with Porsche as I am.... so I wasn't about to **** with him It was the "thank god the school year is over" party our friends had (they're teachers) on 24h LeMans night.... so we got to sit around watching the 24h for a few hours, and I turned him on to sports car racing and the NEW "RS Spyder".

Hot off the presses--Banking industry on verge of collapse. GM in financial trouble.

I only read about these today, so it must be the 1st time they've been reported, cause nothing happens in the world without my knowing about it.
