Default Subaru out of WRC for 09? following suzuki?

http://jalopnik.com/5110732/subaru-o...llowing-suzuki

Subaru may pull its support from the World Rally Championship for 2009, joining Suzuki as yet another Japanese automaker planing to leave the series.

A report posted on the Finnish MTV3 network's website claims Subaru will no longer compete in the World Rally Championship in 2009. This is big news as Subaru developed much of its following and fan base by successful competing in the series with its iconic blue-and-yellow Imprezas.

If this report is correct, it would build on news earlier today of Suzuki pulling out of the WRC. Unlike Subaru, Suzuki was new to the series and therefore moving away from the series isn't as big of a deal.

Though companies like to have racing teams to show off their engineering prowess, in a bad economy it is sometimes the easiest thing to cut. This may explain why these reports are coming out so regularly. Of course, the WRC is introducing Spec-based rules for the future, but it may be too late for these two teams.

It would give them time to devote their efforts at getting SADEV or Xdrive to fit the Impreza, if that's even possible.

Audi and Porsche have pulled out of American LeMans. The sky is indeed falling.

I would guess that they pull the Subaru Corporate Team and instead source cars to private teams like how Audi gives R10's to Champion Audi which is privately owned.

This will take the cost off of FHI's books, yet still keep Subaru's in WRC. It is a good idea for the time being.

I figured this was going to happen with Subaru shift in marketing, the move away from MacPherson struts, the lack of ability to perform, and the increase in operating costs. I'm waiting for confirmation though, before I stick a fork in it.

I thought I just read in the suzuki quiters thread that subaru was one of only four manufacturers already signed on for the 09 season.

Seems like the new style car will be the only generation of Impreza that won't win a WRC rally

LOL epic fail on the thread title, kartman.

I say Subaru is not going to pull the plug on the 09 season. They're just *too* invested in rallying as part of their marketing strategy. But here in the Japan domestic market, the interest in the motorsports aspect of Subaru has been declining over the past decade, and nowadays their domestic advertising is more along the lines of "family" and "eco." Neither of which are games you are going to win with a boxer layout, incidentally.

I think Subaru is going to be doing some serious soul-searching over 2009 and possibly distance themselves more from WRC and perhaps pull out in 2010. The future of the brand doesn't look good though...

But then again I didn't see the Suzuki thing coming at all. Crazy stuff.

Subarus should at least still be in group N, I imagine. Evos still have a presence even without the corporate backing.

Maybe the WRC will end up like the I.R.O.C. used to be in the US....
Everyone racing ONE car type and model.

Next time you see a Wall Street hedge fund broker tell him thanks and kick him in the nuts for me for starting this whole mess.

I'm sure I saw an article somewhere today (but of course can't find it now) that said Peugeot was in.

I hope Subaru sticks with it just for one more season in 2009... otherwise there will be no chance of Gronholm + Subaru.
