Default Maple syrup smell

My 08 OBS has 4,000 miles on it. I notice a maple syrup coolant smell when the car has been ran for a long time. My wife's 06 Outback XT has the same smell after it is good and heated up. The temperature gauge on the 06 always stays right below the middle and has never gone up. The 08 does not have a gauge so I don't know. Is this normal?

smell inside of the car? Could be a leaking heater core.

The smell is on the Outside of both our Subarus. We smell it in the garage, it is not in the vents when the heat is on.

take it in for warranty service, you probably have a small crack in the radiator.

"(1) SMELLS LIKE: MAPLE SYRUP

WHEN: After the engine has warmed or possibly even after it's shut off for a few minutes.
THE CULPRIT: Coolant containing sweet-smelling (but toxic) ethylene glycol is leaking from somewhere. It could be coming from a radiator or heater hose, a failed intake manifold gasket or cylinder head. It might be coming from a leaky radiator cap or the radiator itself, especially if you smell it outside the car. A strong odor inside the passenger compartment probably means a bad heater core."

Both the 06 Outback XT and the 08 Outback Sport have had the smell since the day we drove them off the lot. There are no visible leaks on either car. I even clean and dust off the engines from time to time. This only happens after the engines have been ran for an hour or more and are nice and warmed up.

The overflow tank on both cars are exactly where they should be. I've checked it.

The smell of coolant could be several different problems all of which the dealership should take care of. I would take both cars to the dealer asap. FYI the water temp gauge in the outback is a dummy gauge, it stays at a certain point. This means that the water temp could be at 5 (for example this is just a meaningless number) then the temp could move up to 15 but the needle will never move from that spot until lets say it raises to 30. I would just keep that in mind. The 08 and up Impreza's have a similar thing but its in a light more like the Toyota's, when the car is cold you will see a blue light and a red light when the car is overly warm and off when the car is normal.
