Default Oil Change Question/Mix-Up

I just changed the oil in my '02 WRX for the first time. I put in 5 quarts (a little less actually) of Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic Motor Oil.

I changed it at ~2950 miles. The Subaru manual suggests 3,000 miles, and then 7,500 miles, 15,000 miles, 22,500 miles.....

Isn't that too long to wait between oil changes?

The dealer, yesterday, said that there's no harm in changing the oil early and keeping it fresh. I redline my car occassionally, like once or twice a day, but nothing major.

I'll always put in Mobil 1.

But I'll also change it every 3,000 miles. I think waiting 7,500 miles per change is too much.

What do you people think?

It all depends on how you drive. I change mine every 3K with the Mobile Trisynthetic. I notice if I wait till like 5K I start to lose power.

ive always thought the numbers were alittle on the high side too...but lotsa new cars are starting to list oil change intervals like this.

changing it every 3000 miles wont hurt...but if your using mobil 1...changing it every 7500 miles wont hurt either.

I stick to 3000-3500 miles tho, seems like the oils ok but the filter gets really heavy.

I thought the 7500 miles between oil changes only apply to the "ideal" conditions...maybe an aired condition clean room with constant rpm or something like that. Most of our daily driving will probably fall into the "harsh conditions" category (i.e. short trips, stop/go traffic, "extreme" hot or cold weather, etc...).

if you drive normal and have a stock car, 7k miles shouldnt be a problem. many cars these days have even longer change intervals than that.

I do it every 3k because I beat on my car and its modded.

I shoot for every 3k mostly out of habit of years of changing the oil at 3k. So when I start nearing 3k i start thinking about an oil change and sometimes I get it in there right around 3k and other times it has to wait for 4 or 5k... If I waited till 7500k I probably wouldnt get around to it until 10K which wouldnt be too great.

I've been searching for this for a while now, how hard was it to change the oil yourself?? Would it be something I could get done on the car after work and before the sun goes down? I got my subie last week and haven't been able to get under the car yet to check things out.

Every 2k for me out here in this heat, my 20w50 is water by then
it must be from the heat it just breaks down quicker. i might
try some straight 40w too see how it handles it. later

The WRX might be the easiest car that I have ever changed the oil on. I took out the drain plug without lifting the car. I lifted the car a few inches to take out the oil filter, but I probably didn't need to lift it at all.

phxscooby101... I use straight 30W here in PA and the difference between that and 10W-40W is that the turbo spools alittle slower... I'm stickin with the glue fer longevity!!

hahaa. That's the best part of the whole post. I do the same thing (not really redline), it's just funny.

yeah, the oil is SO easy to change on this car. It's the easiest of all the cars I've had. Just reach under and you can feel the filter and plug. btw, I change mine btwn 2500-3000 miles everytime.

That's interesting about the spool up verus the weight of the
oil you use? I started with 5w30 when it was new a gradually
got thicker.

The last stuff i used was 15w40 multigrade penzoil that was
pretty good i'll see how 20w50 penzoil stands up.

Whats the spool up difference between 5w30 and 20w50?
anyone got any ideas? later
