Default US News Makes It's Top Cars For The Money Choices For 2009, But Are They Yours?

Quote:
US News Media Group one of the nation's leading sources of service journalism and news analysis, today released its first annual Best Cars for the Money awards, available online at and featured in the December 29 issue of the magazine, on newsstands December 22, 2008.

The U.S. News Best Cars for the Money awards recognize 14 vehicles that earn the highest marks for overall value and appeal within their respective categories. In determining the award winners, U.S. News has taken its newly released 2009 Car Rankings and combined them with total cost of ownership data provided by IntelliChoice.com.

"The auto industry has clearly been among the hardest hit by the economic downturn, but let's not forget that car buyers are also struggling to make sense of a tumultuous market," said Chad Smolinski, Vice President of Rankings & Reviews for U.S. News. "The Best Cars for the Money list recognizes vehicles that can be the most rewarding for car shoppers - namely those that win the most praise and offer the most compelling overall value."

The U.S. News car rankings provide an unbiased comparison of each vehicle to its competitors, helping shoppers identify the best cars in each category. Rankings are based primarily on the balanced, diverse opinions of hundreds of professional auto critics.

With a 22-year history of providing consumers with reliable information about vehicle costs, IntelliChoice.com measures both the target price that consumers can expect to pay for a vehicle as well as its 5-year total cost of ownership. Combining this data with U.S. News car rankings allows different models to be compared on a very useful metric -- overall appeal for the money.

"Knowing the latest incentives, rebates, fuel costs, and projected resale values is as valuable and necessary as knowing a fair purchase price," said James Bell, Editor of IntelliChoice.com. "Combining this information with editorial rankings provides a strong guidepost for those looking to purchase in today's rapidly changing auto market."

Hmm why are badges of cars there when they are not on the list and vice versa?

Interesting to see them pick the Mazda 5. If I was in the market for that type of people-hauler, the value is immense and cannot be overlooked when you factor in the price there.

There isn't a single vehicle on that list I'd want. Maybe an RX, if you held a gun to my head.

I dunno, I could go with the Lexus cars, the Tacoma and the Silverado. They fit in with what I could use at the moment.

Owning a business- a Lexus looks good to customers and suppliers.
Either the Tacoma or the Silverado could be put to great use, more so the Silverado 4 door just for extra space for the kid and dogs.

I'd be happy to see any of those in my driveway.

Off hand I am not sure if a Subaru Legacy is a Mid size sedan but the Legacy Value thing or Special Package whatever it's called is great value for the price I think also they are dealing on them.

I'm a wrx/FD3s owner, but I've also had six miatas. Two currently, one is turbo'd. You can guess how I feel about them.

You don't ride in a Miata, you become one with the car.

Seriously.

Seriously? The RX-8 is an MX-5 that's been stretched, capped, styled and rotorfied. Imagine the sweet handling of the RX-8, with a simple 4 cylinder engine and much faster responses. One of my favorite things about the miata is that brakes and tires last a very long time and are difficult to overheat during spirited driving.... oh, and that you can drive in anger without attracting any negative attention.

Just never got around to getting into a Miata yet. I'll have to sit shotgun in one at the next autox or something.

miatas are great... IF you have the right roads, IF NOT they are a HUGE SNORE... though add 10K to any Miata and it becomes a very good car.

PS: the MPG on my swapped Impreza was as good as my stock 1.8L miata... For my money you can't beat a Subaru for overall goodness.

My Miata will get new life with an LS1, when/If the economy turns for the better..

I bought the latest generation Miata in 2006. While the salesman wasn't holding a gun to my head, he was quite high pressure.

I won't call it a "bargain" at MSRP, considering I got it for a $9,000 discount in the spring of the model year, with only 2K miles on the car. I sold it to CarMax for a small profit, only a few months later (because I'm too tall to fit properly)

Is it a car worth owning at least once in your life? Oh HELL yes!

They probably were unaware that the new Accord is classified as a full size car.
Methinks the US News Media are not really gearheads or even enthusiasts.

I use to own a 1996 and whenever I let my friends in the driver seat they kept on saying it felt like the car was begging them to punch the gas mid-turn and they refused to believe I didn't install a short throw shifter
