Default My AC compressor is sick or dead

Yes I think it died as it screems a metalic whine when i start the engine. The compressor clutch is not engaging at all. The question 1. should I pull the belt untill the clutch can be repaired or replaced? #2 can the clutch be rebuilt or do i replace the whole unit? I still operate the car as normal and feel no surges just sounds like I have a supercharger spooling up
Thanks for your time and suggestions

Question

So what did you do? My wife just called me to tell me the AC in our WRX wasn't working and "it was making a funny sound."

if the compressor itself is siezed not much you can do. the clutch is replacable, but will not do you any good if the compressor itself siezed. Get it checked out. If the comressor did sieze chances are it contaminated the rest of the a/c system, it would have to be replaced the system flushed out to make sure there is no metal in it.

Lovely, thanks. And here I was hoping I could just buy some refrigerant at Kragen.

Edit: I called her back and she said the sound is coming from the vents and not under the hood so maybe there's still a faint hope for a leak and not a blown compressor for our car?

Mine turned out to be [at least] two bad o-rings allowing all the refrigerant out. Of course those plus vacuum and refill and labor at the dealer is $200+. Good times. At least it wasn't anything more expensive than that this time.
