Default TTAC’s Ten Worst Autos 2008

Quote:
The votes are cast. The polls are closed. And there’s no question which vehicles our Best and Brightest consider the TTAC’s Ten Worst Vehicles 2008. The good news: there are only two new “winners” this year. The bad news: there are only two new “winners” this year. In fact, eight of last year’s Ten Worst are still in production. Even more depressing: half of this year’s winners have “won” TTAC’s Ten Worst three years running. How long can these turkeys hang on? Pass the cranberry sauce and read on.

There was no doubt about the final ten. When all the nominees were lined up in order of the number of votes garnered, there was a huge gap between numbers 10 and 11. So how did they rank? Here they are:

1

0. Chevy TrailBlazer / GMC Envoy / Isuzu Ascender / Saab 9-7X - What’s not to love about a refined straight six or a rip-snorting V8 in a family hauler? The miserable GMT-360 platform. No matter what iteration you pick, you get a jittery ride, third-world interior and panel gaps large enough to be seen from outer space. After years of insignificant redesigns, this rig’s corroded six brands, killed two and put three in the hospital. Die already, will ya? - sm

9. VW Routan – The Volkswagen Routan is a badge-engineered Dodge Caravan. Pros forge Monets, not Hello Kitty posters.- mm

8. HUMMER H2 - I secretly like the H2. It fits with my theory that all SUVs need to look like Patton could’ve used ‘em to invade Sicily. Problem is, the poster child for “Drill Baby, Drill!” is anything but. It’s a Chevy Tahoe in a fat suit. A body on frame anachronism that not even a G.I. Joe doll could love. – jl

7. HUMMER H3/H3T – The Edsel had a peculiar name and a “controversial” design. The wrong car for the wrong time, it was a failure from the word go. Sorry. Did I say Edsel? I meant HUMMER H3. - wcm

6. Dodge Nitro – Do you think the tropical-paradise-nuking French care that we put panties on a few prisoners’ heads? No, they abhor our conspicuous consumption and tough-guy dress-up routines. To show them we have a sense of humor, we should send them the Dodge Nitro: a slow, cramped, artless knockoff of a HUMMER H2. Either that or use the Nitro as artillery shells. - jl

5. Dodge Caliber - As the ad campaign put it, the Caliber is anything but cute. Specifically, it’s noisy, garish, heavy-footed, hard to see out of, gutless, inefficient and poorly built. By trying to tart-up a compact to look like something Americans loved (big utes), Chrysler destroyed nearly every benefit of the small-hatch form. - en

4. Chrysler Aspen / Dodge Durango – You can dress up an ancient, arthritic, gas-sucking, poorly-packaged Dodge Durango as a Chrysler Aspen, but you can’t take it anywhere. Saying that, you can give it an expensive two-mode gas – electric hybrid system and drive it to Congress to get a bailout. But then people who know cars will laugh. As they should. rf

3. Chevrolet Aveo – The Aveo continues to offer a snap-crackle-pop interior, mediocre gas mileage, roly-poly handling and gutless onramp terror. With GM touting for bailout bucks, the fact that this sad excuse for an economy car comes from Korea is painfully poignant. And just plain painful. - en

2. Jeep Compass - From droning tires to a jouncy suspension to an engine that moans more than a five-year-old denied Disneyland, this un-Jeep is a cacophony of cheap. Design-wise, The Compass is a sub-moronic riff on the brand’s storied heritage. If you need further proof that Jeep Compass is an abominable snow job, check out the fake rivets on the shift knob. Better yet, don’t. - rf

1. Chrysler Sebring / Dodge Avenger – What do you do after a tremendous, demographic-busting hit like the 300C? If you’re Chrysler, you offer up a malformed, worst-in-segment, natural-born rental car and expect consumers to buy it. When historians write Chrysler’s obituary, the Sebring will get its own chapter. - jl

You have chosen…wisely. These are surely the most putrefied products on the automotive landscape today. But what about the rest? How did the also-rans rank? Here they are, in order from number 11 through number 23:

11. smart fortwo
12. Jeep Commander
13. Pontiac Torrent
14. Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon
15. Cadillac Escalade
16. Lincoln Mark LT
17. Scion xB
18. Kia Amanti
19. Chevy Cobalt / Pontiac G5
20. Suzuki Forenza
21. Tesla Roadster
22. Buick Lacrosse
23. Saab 9-5

And so ends yet another TTAC Ten Worst Vehicle award. Will anything change before the 2009 awards? With everything that’s going on in the industry right now, something has to change. But rest assured that unless everything changes for the better, we’ll be back in a year, looking at next year’s latest crop of automotive atrocities and singling out America’s Ten Worst Vehicles. Meanwhile, thanks for your help, support and snark. We couldn’t do this without you. Nor would we.

Ummm...

I'm pretty sure the Jeep Compass should have been in with the Dodge Caliber. They are built on the same chassis (just like the Caravan / Routan, Aspen / Durango, Sebring / Avenger, etc...).

But they were pretty on target with that...

The Tesla and the 9-5 were a little off IMHO, I think both of those are decent looking, in fact if I had the $100+k for the Tesla, I would drive it.

Yeah where did the smart, scion, and tesla come from? Not that I would want the scion or smart but I understand their function and know that they aren't crappy built cars. The tesla is a great performer and most that have driven it liked it, unless their manhood is somehow hurt by EV's which seems to happen often. Other than that they are spot on.

The origonal xB was a hit, the redesign is a disaster, that is probably where that came from. The 9-5 is a poor badge engineered Opel so that may be part of that but really don't know about the Tesla. I would drive one.

Peace,

Greg

Agree here...the Tesla still gets a pass at this point. And the 9-5? That's no slouch of a car at all.

I have to agree too, Tesla is not an ideal car but it's a huge step forward in terms of electric cars. Saab always made pretty decent cars until GM idiots decided to put their hands on it. 9-5 may be nothing special but solid car.

But I have to suport the xB nomination. I have no idea what people who bought it were thinking, no matter if it's the old one or the new one, it was fugly and pretty much on par with Nitro in every category.

Robert Farago making light of the U.S. government's use of torture and other outlawed tactics on prisoners is out of place in a car "article" and disgusting.

The Caliber was a decent rental, but that's about it. Can't say I have any other issues with the top 10 choices. Even the top 23 is pretty good... the fortwo is debatable, I guess. It's green, popular, and for what it is, I think has pretty decent looks... it just doesn't have the juice or mpg of its overseas brothers.

I loved the old xB, but absolutely hate everything about the new one. I used to really support Scion, but now I feel like they should just absorb the small cars back into the general Toyota lineup. What they're selling now goes against a lot of what attracted buyers to the brand in the first place.

the commander and 9-5 are not that bad.... but I otherwise, I Agree. The avenger is the worst car I've ever driven. I had it in kauai on my honeymoon, and It was the only car I've ever driven that physically hurt to just drive. Hard edged plastic interior panels, loud, noise polluting four banger, and awkward suspension and pedal placement...

oh, and the door would swing back in your face when you opened it to get out of the car.

here's their review of the 9-5

Default Good list

Though yes I agree some of the comments about the Smart - Tesla - sicon etc -- guessing the writer lives someplace outside of the major markets these are targeted at.

The Smart cars are basically sold out here in SF to the point that people are selling their brand new Smart on craigs list for a premium price and going back and ordering another one.

Kinda like the Mini cooper. Tesla is doing something no other company has tried and has only delivered a few cars, again their target market isn't Nebraska or Ohio or where ever this writer lives.

I am surprised to see a Saab as an honourable mention for "worst car" but I do feel they have basically priced themselves out of competition by trying to pretend they are a luxury brand. Price does have to count for somthing. If Honda was trying to sell the Accord for $40,000 it might be on the list too.

Uh, reliability is a bit spotty I guess, but most Saab owners seem to accept that (says the guy with a new Saab injection cassette sitting in his hallway waiting for installation).

SMART - Now there's some irony in that name. I don't see how the Jeep Patriot didn't make the list and I thought the Colorado was a nice truck, but I haven't driven one. Other than that, the list is spot on from my perspective, but of course I live in Austin, TX so I'm some sort of hick idiot.

I'd completely agree that the SMART should be on the list. For the money people pay, it has pretty cheapy build quality. The interior plastics seem very light and thin. The front hood panel thing is alarmingly flimsy, very Fisher-Price. And the gas milage is good, but I'd expect much better from such small car with such a weezy worthless engine. For the same price or less (depending on options), you can have a Toyota Yaris hatchback, which is basically just as econimical and green, but has more power, better build quality, 2 back seats, and actual cargo space.

It's a aged design that I saw driving around in Europe when I was in high school (when they first came out over there). It's kind of a rubbish car that sells well to people who want to exude greenness or folks who think smaller automatically means more economical (which is true, to a point). I like the way they look, but it's a damned 4 wheeled scooter and people are paying upwards of $15k for them when they could have a much better all-around car for less.
