GM Announces Ecotec Turbo Upgrade For Sky, Solstice, HHR SS: 290 hp, 340 lb-ft, and a Factory Warranty

GM may have started the day by winning over common consumers with the announcement of more efficient direct-injection 2.4-liter and 3.0-liter engines for its future products, but it has now wowed the enthusiast world today as well. According to GMTunerSource.com, GM's Performance Division is now offering an LNF turbo upgrade kit that involves an ECU reflash and upgraded MAP sensors.

For the incredibly low price of $650, the kit raises the 2.0-liter's (one of GM's current direct-injection units) output from 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque to a more energetic 290 hp and a diesel-like 340 lb-ft of torque. It's currently available on the Saturn Sky Red Line and Pontiac Solstice GXP, along with the Chevrolet HHR SS. Those poor tires--they don't know what they're in for.

You might be wondering why we left the Cobalt SS out of the mix, and the truth is we don't quite know. Comments in the forums say there are some air delivery issues there that need to be sorted out, but GM promises a kit for that car in the Q1 2009. For the Sky and Solstice, the reflash also adds the HHR/Cobalt's "no-lift shift" capability. And yes, because this is coming from the factory, that 100,000-mile warranty remains intact. This makes the upcoming debut of the Solstice coupe approximately 20 percent more exciting.

Hopefully, it also helps GM move a few more cars.

I'm a fan of the sky and a fan of 340 ft-lb's. Sweetness!

Wow. Color me impressed.

Unfortunately, most of these cars aren't lacking in horsepower, and instead need other improvements.

I so <3 the Sky though... I just wish it was a more usable car.

That's exactly what a FWD HHR needs, 290hp & 340ft/lb.

I guess if you're looking to drive in a straight line everywhere, it could be okay...or not.

The Solstice / Sky would be one helluva handful, but I bet you can steer just using your right foot.

Too much power for a little car huh? LOL! These cars all weigh close to 3000lbs. Compare it to an STi @ 3300lbs w/ 320 hp 300 ft/lbs

better yet, go look at the KTM in this section. 15xx lbs w/ 220, 260, or 300 hp.

290 hp/340 tq. Now we're talking what a 2 seater should be doing.

kosoku.... why are you comparing a $60K purpose made specialty car to a mass produced GM car for 1/2 the price. Quite an unfair comparison. (Not to mention, you can't get the XBow in the US)

Holy... So pick up a Sky Red Line at the Red Tag Sale and throw another $650 into the financing for $30,800ish. That would walk an STi/EVO.

Wow, that's amazing, and for such little money (if it's true). And yes, that coupe DOES look sexy, although its ergonomics and suspension needs more work than the engine bay (same with the Sky, sexy though).

I was comparing the power 2 weight not the $$ since the person above said 290/340 was "too much power for a little car".

300 lb less is actually a lot. Plus its RWD, more power to the wheels than AWD.

300lbs is a fat bastard in shotgun.

You guys seriously need to read who I commented on. He stated that its too much power for a small car. Its not a small car and its not too much power is all I'm saying. It weighs 3k lbs for a "small car". I was comparing that to an STi which isn't considered a "small car" but weighs 300 more @ 3300lbs.

I used to have a lotus that weighed 1900lbs and had 190 hp. Is that too much power for a "small car"?

Ditto.

Hell, it's heavier than an FD or 240sx. Plus, isn't this the same forum where all you assclowns do nothing but auto-"Fail" any new sporty car that gets announced with a curb weight over 3000lbs? Make up your minds.
