Default Weak Sales Squeezes Toyota of Australia, Forces Cutting of TRD

Quote:
Toyota Racing Development sells hop-up parts for trucks and Scions here, but little known to us Northern Hemisphere types is that it is — scratch that, was — a competitor for Holden Specialty Vehicles and Ford Performance Vehicles in Australia, selling complete, turnkey cars. After just sixteen months, the division has sold just 888 vehicles — 537 supercharged V-6 Aurion TRD sedans and 351 Hilux pickup trucks.

To hear it from Toyota's spokespeople, "the world economic downturn and the need to achieve significant operational efficiencies" forced closure of the division. Unsold models were often offered with up to $5000 in incentives, just to move metal off dealer lots. TRD's 17 employees will be relocated within Toyota on March 31, 2009, when the division turns out the lights for good.

I prefer drive.com.au's headline "Toyota dumps TRD".
