Default BMW releases official X5 M video

Quote:
BMW clearly thinks the time is right to release an official video of the X5 M testing at the Nurburgring. Itís the car, along with the X6 M, thatís caused BMW to can the M3 CSL.
So we get this BMW X5 M instead of a CSL?

Afraid so. M Divisionís old boss Gerhard Richter once told CAR that the company would only produce high-revving, naturally-aspirated engines powering rear-wheel drive cars.
Richter is no longer M Division boss. He was replaced by Ludwig Willisch who has cancelled the CSL and approved cars like the X5 and X6 M. According to Willisch there just wonít be enough demand for a stripped-out M3.

Instead we get an X5 with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and around 500bhp. See the car in action below, and watch the introduction carefully Ė it features lots of M Divisionís rear-wheel drive cars in action. We feel like shedding a tear.

The end of the M Division, or will increased profits mean we'll get a next-gen M3 CSL? Click 'Add your comment' below and have your say

wtf? did this ludwig willisch fella come from mercedes, where they amg-ify everything in their lineup? the m3 competes against the c63. so wheres bmw's answer to the c63 black? this new guy is dullifying an otherwise "once-was" exciting car company.

Less expensive alternative to the Cayenne TT range. I would definitely consider for a DD.

You and hopefully no one else. Making SUVs into M cars is the worst idea BMW has ever had; regardless of profits.

if people like them and buy them, I don't see why you get to decide they are the worst idea BMW had

people said the same thing about the cayenne, now its incredibly popular, and an amazing car

your personal preference doesn't make it a bad idea

True, but the idea of a porsche suv still turns my stomach. Besides, they are supposed to M CARS, not suvs. If thats the change they need, fine, but I don't have to like it.

What about M (which means motorsport) equals a 5000 suv? M is supposed to be about high revving engines and manual transmissions in great handling cars, not suv's.

i don't like it either but it makes sense. you can make way more money selling huge X5Ms than a couple CSL's here and there.

Trailblazer SS, Saab x7, Dodge had the R/T Durango for a bit, SRT8 Grand Cherokee, Cayenne...

It's not new territory. Kudos BMW, kick the proverbial ass of the fast SUVs.

I see what you mean. I personally like these performance SUVs because they seem so wrong and useless and yet so cool. Kinda like an experiment to see how fast you can make something that is meant fur a completely different purpose. I would buy it just for the wow aspect, not with the intention to race it. Something about a 5000lb suv that can run a mid 12sec 1/4 mile just makes me giggle inside. I thought it was stupid until I drove a jeep gc srt8, it was so stupid but felt unreal because it was so big. The whole unexpected experience makes these cars useless yet awesome toys. They have no set purpose or heritage, so I guess I can see where the "m cars" part could piss off some enthusiasts.

Just my 2 cents, flame away nasioc!!

Soooo, making a profitable product is a bad idea for BMW? And, having a DD that is big enough to put my dog in, go to Costco, etc., yet still be fast and fun is just wrong? Why?

I'll still have my fun car in the garage for the weekends, so, where is the downside? Why would you rather me drive a Tahoe than an X5M or Cayenne TT?

people are gonna have suv's no matter what because there will always be ppl that have enough money to afford no matter gas prices and some people really just have the need. when we needed a four wheel drive vehicle that could fit my mom, dad, and 4 kids what else were we going to buy? we had to get a suburban.

i'd love to have that X5 M.

550 HP TT V8 with twinscroll snails? - probably very small turbos but could still be a healthy 600 to the wheels uncorked if true - and likely 40K less than a Cayenne TTS. Sounds fun to me and my Danes get to the park faster.

I don't think it's a bad idea. From a purist/aristocratic perspective, yes I see the drudgery of having ///M "stoop" to the level of catering to the masses. But, the truth is that a lot of people love and/or need something other than a sports coupe or sedan. So, why limit the Motorsport division solely to cars?

Besides, Mercedes has had a jump on the tuned SUV market for a while now, with AMG, so if you ask me, they're just being smart by keeping up.
