2008: Worst tuned jobs

You can run, you can hide but you can’t get away from it: hideously tuned cars are everywhere. Giant bodykits, improbable engine tweaks, luminescent flame paint jobs - even though we know they’re bad, we can’t help looking.

Here are some of the worst – or best, maybe – of the tuned-up monstrosities from the last 12 months. Most of them are German.

AC Schnitzer BMW X6: We didn’t think it was possible to make the X6 any more awkward looking, so hats off to AC Schitzer for its valiant effort.

Brabus Tesla: ‘You know how the Tesla is all, like, quiet and stuff? Wouldn’t it be great if it made weird Star Trek noises instead?’

Techart 911 Turbo: OK, this isn’t horrible at all. In fact, it’s rather awesome. Awesome in that ‘quite likely to kill you very quickly’ sort of way, that is…

Hamann Volcano SLR: Not tasteless as such – OK, it’s a 700bhp SLR, but you know what we mean – but worthy of inclusion for the name alone. There just aren’t enough cars named after murderous tectonic phenomena, are there?

Chevy Camaro Black: Once again, not tasteless at all, just a little bit terrifying. This whole ‘rubbish tuning’ theme is going out the window a bit, isn’t it?

9ff GT9: Ha! Look at the silly modified 911! Look at the silly decals and aero stuff! What’s that? 1,000bhp and 250mph? OK, we’ll stop laughing now.

Lorinser SL: Ah, there we go. Back in the world of proper horrendous tuning, courtesy of German tuning house Lorinser. So bad it’s almost good.

Toyota Yaris Speedster: We don’t have the words to describe the bizzareness of this one. In fact, we’re not even sure bizarreness is a word. OK, technically it’s an in-house effort rather than an aftermarket job, but we didn’t think we could let 2008 pass without one more look at this one.
Here’s to plenty more bizarre creations in 2009. Don’t ever stop, crazy tuning people…

2008: Best of the racers

One of the happiest trends of 2008 has been the emergence of a whole bunch of brilliant racing-versions-of-road-cars. We’re sure there’s a snappier name somewhere, but you know the stuff we mean: track-prepped, sticky-tyred production cars with proper roll cages and racing exhausts and lots of lovely things like that.
Here are some of our favourites from the last year:

X-Bow GT4: bewinged flyweight heads to GT4. Just imagine duking it out on the track alongside Astons and Corvettes. Scary.

Lotus 2-Eleven GT4: Lotus takes it to KTM with its own featherweight racer. We’ve driven it. It’s awesome…

Lambo Gallardo Trofeo: thirty of these in a one-make race series? Sounds like a good day out to us. Just imagine the noise..

Scirocco N24: That’s ‘N24’ as in ‘Nurburgring 24 hours’ – yes, VW took this lovely little racing Scirocco to the big ’Ring race. It did well…

R8 GT3: it’s the V10 one. It’s rear-wheel drive. It wants to eat all the Gallardos for breakfast.

BMW M3 ALMS: We might even see this at Le Mans next year. If we ask really, really nicely…

Aston Vantage GT4: The car of choice for the discerning gentleman racer. Now even noisier and faster. Good.

2008: Best supercars

2008 was a good year for supercars. A very good year, in fact. From four-door Lambos to American muscle that actually goes round corners, we’ve been treated to a whole bunch of insanely fast, insanely expensive metal that proves the supercar is far from on its last legs. In fact, it’s healthier than ever.

Here’s some of our favourite supercar stuff from the past 12 months. Click on the blue bits and appease your need for, er, speed…

Lambo LP560-4: Or ‘the new Gallardo’, as it’s better known. Faster, harder, pointier and still just slightly unhinged…

Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider: A drop-top version of an ultra-lightweight supercar? Confusing, yes, but just imagine the noise…

Rolls Phantom Coupe: They call it the ‘sporty Rolls’. Which is an oxymoron like ‘benevolent dictator’, we think. Jaw-dropping in every sense.

Aston Martin One-77: Only 77 of Aston’s million-quid supercars will ever be built. Let’s club together and get one, hey?

Lamborghini Estoque: We thought a four-door Lambo might look a bit, well, un-Lambo-like. And then we saw the Estoque…

Caterham Levante: A 500bhp Caterham with twice the power-to-weight ratio of a Bugatti Veyron? Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Pagani Zonda R: It’s the last ever Zonda, so it’s only fair that the R is the fastest and most expensive iteration of the mad Italian hypercar…

Corvette ZR1: Top Gear’s supercar of the year… and proof that the Americans can build a proper fast car.

Merc SLR Speedster: Quite simply one of the coolest things we’ve ever seen. How does 217mph with no windscreen sound to you?

Audi R8 V10: Audi’s brilliant supercar gets the big V10 out of the Gallardo. Let the sibling rivalry commence…

Because they're abortions, especially the 9ff.

I guess its a matter of opinion but to me the 9ff is an awesome purpose built machine and minus the vinyl actually doesn't look that bad.

Yes. Yes, it is glorious. It would be suicide to drive, but you'd go out laughing like a mad man.

I don't know... the Yaris would be a fun "go-cart" car.
Pull it out of the garage a few times a year for fun, laughs and maybe a local car show?
Maybe a body kit that turns it into a mini-Mach5?
