Default 93 impreza starting problems

For a few weeks now i have been having trouble starting my 93 impreza. i turn the key and its cranking and trying to turn over but has lots of difficulty. If i crank it and have the gas down it takes about a minute to get it started. Once it it started it drives normal and will start up easier after its been driven, unless it sits for a while. Once i get it started i have to let it idle for a little or it will start choking if i hit the gas. I have been using ether to get it started which helps some. I had a mechanic hook it up to some computers and he cant get any readings. Any ideas?

thanks

if its turning over strong enough to turn over for about a minute its probably not a starter problem, if it runs fine once started it might not be an ignition problem, unless you replaced your air filter with 'great stuff' your engine is getting enough air. I'm guessing something is wrong with the fuel delivery system.

could be cam/crank sensor issues. how up to date are you with wire/plug/air filter/fuel filter services?

air filter is good, im pretty sure the plugs and wires are ok, could be a bad fuel filter... im just not wanting to guess and throw money into it if im not sure. but i will prob give the fuel filter a try unless some other ideas are out there

Well it is a 93 and OBD I, you cannot hook it to a computer so I am sure he could not get any readings. He probably does not know how to pull the codes unless he is a Subaru mechanic.
Buy yourself a Haynes manual for a early Legacy, they don't have one for a Impreza but they are exactly the same. It will tell you how to pull the codes and interpret them. You could also search here it is around on several threads.

usually you make sure your car is up to date with all maintenance items before you start chasing runability problems around. change the fuel filter, you need it anyway.
